KODA Presents Saint Joseph Hospital
with Medal of Honor

Saint Joseph Hospital has received a Silver Medal of Honor from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for successfully increasing the number of organs available for transplantation. The hospital achieved a 100% donation rate for the 18 months (October 2008-March 2010) considered by the awards program. Through coordinated efforts and the generosity of their families, six donors provided 12 organs to be transplanted to waiting recipients.

Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) presented the Silver Medal of Honor to Saint Joseph Hospital at a reception on Jan. 26. The awards are a result of the National Organ Donation and Transplantation Breakthrough Collaborative, an initiative launched by HHS in 2003 to increase the availability of transplantable organs.

Flaget Memorial Hospital Now Offering Digital Mammograms

Flaget Memorial Hospital is now offering the very latest in mammography screening with its purchase of the Selenia digital mammography unit that provides razor-sharp images of the breast. The Selenia is the first of its kind to be installed in the Bardstown area.

Digital mammography has been shown to detect cancer better in pre-menopausal women, peri-menopausal women, in women with dense breasts, and in women under the age of 50. It has also shown to be more sensitive in picking up micro-calcifications associated with cancer.

Flaget’s new digital mammogram machine was purchased in part thanks to community support of the Flaget Foundation’s “Yes, Mamm!” program. Digital mammography is also offered at Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East and Saint Joseph - London.

Since Dr. Andy Moore started the program in 2005, thousands of free outpatient surgeries have been performed. SOS utilizes volunteer surgeons and other medical and non-medical volunteers. For income eligible patients with no health insurance, all services and supplies, from the pre-operative visit with a volunteer surgeon, to the imaging studies, to the medications needed before and after surgery, to physical therapy, to the post-operative appointment, are free. National Wear Red Day is Next Friday, February 4

February is American Heart Month, and the American Heart Association has designated its first Friday as National Wear Red Day—part of its Go Red For Women campaign.

Go Red For Women is a movement to alert women to take action and fight heart disease, the number-one killer of women. In central Kentucky, Go Red for Women is sponsored by Saint Joseph Health System.

The American Heart Association and Saint Joseph Health System urges everyone—men, women and children alike—to wear red on February 4 as a show of support for this vital fight. A dress, a shirt, a necktie, a blazer, a pantsuit, a scarf ... anything, as long as it’s red, is perfectly fitting for this occasion. Watch for people in your community—friends, co-workers, the anchors on the news, store clerks, anyone and everyone—to be wearing red. For more information about Go Red For Women, visit www.GoRedForWomen.org.

Kentucky Wear Red Day events

Landmarks going red—Across the region, organizations have come aboard as supporters of Go Red For Women by lighting, accenting and decorating their properties in red.

At Saint Joseph Health System on Friday, February 4...

Employees, volunteers and physicians will be wearing red! Certain facilities will be collecting donations and taking group photos; listen for details in your Daily Line-Up meetings. You can always make a donation at www.GoRedForWomen.org.

Literature Searching, Hands-On Training
for Nurses and Allied Health Professionals *NEW*

The Saint Joseph Hospital Medical Library is hosting a "lunch and learn" presentation for nursing and allied health professionals, titled “Literature Searching using the CINAHL Nursing and Allied Health Database: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature.” Separate sessions are available with hands-on computer training. Ellen Westling, a nurse trainer from the Ebsco Company, will lead the presentation and sessions.

CINAHL Plus with full text is a bibliographic database which indexes the citations and abstracts of current and past nursing, medical and allied health literature. This information is then accessible, by topic and author, etc., from a Google-like search page. Many full text articles are linked for easy access. CINAHL is an outstanding research database and it complements the eClinical Reference very well. It is a great resource if you are conducting nursing or allied health research or attending school.

Accolades

Heart of Saint Joseph Award

Congratulations to Florence Martin for being named a recipient of the Heart of Saint Joseph Award at Saint Joseph - Berea. Florence works in housekeeping. You can read comments from her nomination form below.

Heart of Saint Joseph Award winner Florence Martin and her husband with Saint Joseph - Berea President Greg Gerard (left).

Comments from Florence Martin's Nomination Form

"Florence consistently displays an attitude of serenity, kindness and respect to each and every person she encounters. She is never at a loss for a kind word or a happy smile that she shares with patients and staff alike."

"During the years that I have worked with Florence, I have never heard her speak an ill word about anyone or anything. She always accentuates the positive, never the negative. When others try their best to tear someone down, Florence will try to uplift everyone she meets."

"I injured my foot about one year ago and still have some problems with healing. Florence never fails to ask me how I'm doing and to express interest in my progress. It never feels like lip service. She truly cares about me and about all of her co-workers."

"Florence is a diligent, hard worker. When she is in the emergency department she goes about her duties in a quiet, non-intrusive manner, always respecting the patient's privacy. She always asks before entering a patient care area for fear of interrupting/hindering patient care. The fact that she takes pride in her work is evident in the quality of work she produces."

"Florence is a joy to work with and it always makes me smile to see her. Our lives would me made richer if we could all display the qualities that Florence does on a daily basis and that's why I would like to nominate her for the Heart of Saint Joseph Award."

A Farewell to Pat Patton

A farewell party was held for Pat Patton, RN, on Jan. 19. Pat, who served as chief operating officer and chief nursing officer for Saint Joseph - Berea, has moved to Denver, Colo., to start his new job as vice president of clinical leadership development at CHI.

At his farewell party, managers presented Pat Patton with a cross made of pottery shards from Madison County potters. It was displayed in a shadow box filled with comments. It represents a smaller version of the artwork displayed in Saint Joseph - Berea that managers created at a retreat a couple of years ago.

Tip from the
“Working Green, Living Green” Team

Every time you turn on the TV, switch on the lights or start your car, you emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. You can offset your CO2 emissions by joining a carbon-offset program, such as TerraPass, NativeEnergy or Carbonfund.org.

First, go to www.carbonfootprint.com to calculate your CO2 emissions (also called your carbon footprint). Carbon-offset programs will, for a small fee, invest in
activities to remove an equal amount of carbon from the air.

The average American is responsible for 10 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Saint Joseph Health System's
Working Green, Living Green team
encourages you to "think green."
