Wireless EKG Technology in Mount Sterling will Slash Time from Heart Attack Diagnosis to Treatment When it comes to saving heart attack victims, health care providers say “time is muscle.” If time can be cut between diagnosis and treatment, more of a patient’s heart muscle can be saved from damage. Shorter wait times mean more patients survive. At Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, a new program, CODE STEMI, links health care professionals at different facilities with a system that slashes the time it takes to diagnose and treat the most serious type of heart attack, known as a STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction).
Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling emergency department nurses and paramedics from the Montgomery County Fire/EMS launch a new program that utilizes wireless EKG technology to slash time from heart attack diagnosis to treatment. When paramedics from the Montgomery County Fire/EMS are summoned for a possible heart attack victim, they perform a rapid EKG at the scene. In a flash, EKG results are transmitted wirelessly to the Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling emergency department, where a physician reads them. If a STEMI is confirmed, the physician can activate the cardiac catheterization team at Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington, where the patient can be transported via helicopter.
New wireless EKG technology can now transmit data directly to the Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling emergency department from a patient’s home, saving valuable time for heart attack victims.
From the scene, EKG results are transmitted wirelessly to the Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling emergency department, where a physician reads them and determines if a patient is suffering a heart attack.
Nurses with Air Methods Kentucky helicopter service monitor a heart attack victim as he’s transported to Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington. Results from the wireless EKG technology help relay vital information to the medical team on the ground before the patient arrives. Prior to the initiation of CODE STEMI, it was a challenge to get a rural heart attack victim to a hospital equipped with a cath lab quickly. The new wireless EKG technology in Mount Sterling will not only save lives, but will also help preserve the quality of life of our patients by reducing the amount of heart injury. The program was started with funding from the Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling Foundation, Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling and the Montgomery County Fire/EMS. CODE STEMI is a partnership between the Montgomery County Fire/EMS, Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling’s emergency department, the Air Methods Kentucky helicopter service, and the Lexington Clinic, which supplies 24/7 on-call interventional cardiologists for Saint Joseph Hospital’s cath labs. | CNN Names Dr. Andy Moore a 'CNN Hero' Dr. Andy Moore was named a CNN Hero for his work with the Surgery on Sunday (SOS) program in Lexington. Dr. Moore is a plastic surgeon with Plastic Surgeons of Lexington and a member of the Saint Joseph Hospital Medical Staff. On February 20 and 21, CNN visited Dr. Moore to learn more about the SOS program and his efforts to serve the underserved. The segment will air on CNN today through Saturday, March 5-6 (see schedule below). Dr. Moore is a nominee for the 2010 CNN Hero of the Year. Dr. Moore started the SOS program in 2005 with a $145,000 grant from Catholic Health Initiatives and in-kind donations amounting to $567,000. Since the start, thousands of free outpatient surgeries have been performed and the program is serving as a model for start-ups in other cities. SOS utilizes volunteer surgeons and other medical and non-medical volunteers. Saint Joseph Hospital nurses provide a large portion of the care. Free outpatient surgeries are performed in donated space in the Lexington Surgery Center on the Saint Joseph Hospital campus the third Sunday of every month. For income eligible patients with no health insurance, all services and supplies, from the pre-operative visit with a volunteer surgeon, to the imaging studies, to the medications needed before and after surgery, to physical therapy, to the post-operative appointment, are free. To learn more, visit www.surgeryonsunday.org. To volunteer in a medical or non-medical capacity, call 859.246.0046. Performance Culture Assessment—Complete survey March 8-April 5! Beginning Monday, March 8, CHI will conduct a Performance Culture Assessment survey of all CHI employees. The survey replaces the Employee Climate Assessment survey. Employee responses to the Performance Culture Assessment will help Saint Joseph Health System identify and evaluate opportunities for improvement in its relationship with employees and leadership effectiveness. As of March 8, employees will begin receiving e-mails with a Web link to the survey and log in information. To access the survey, employees will need their Employee ID number. This will eliminate confusion on department codes and duplicate entries. Individual responses will remain anonymous. No one in CHI or Saint Joseph Health System will be able to view individual survey responses. Your Employee ID number is located under the “My Pay” tab of HR/Payroll Connection, on one of your pay stubs. (Note: Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling employees will be assigned a number, which will be provided in an e-mail). The survey will be available March 8-April 5 and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Leaders will receive results for their respective groups in late spring to share with their teams and develop action plans. Last year, Saint Joseph Health System achieved nearly 100% participation within its facilities. This year, we hope to meet this level of participation. Everyone who completes the survey will be eligible for prizes! |
