New Edition of Sacred Stories Published
Book features SJHS employees’ chronicles

The 11th edition of Sacred Stories was recently published and features contributions from the following Saint Joseph Health System employees: Katherine Vaughan, Saint Joseph Hospital; Flora Washburn, Saint Joseph - Berea; Ed Shei, Saint Joseph Hospital; Rose Rexroat and Barbara Baumgardner, Saint Joseph Hospital; Sandy Johnson and Melissa Sanchez, Saint Joseph - London; Renee Chandler-Hall, Saint Joseph - Martin; and Jan Cornett, Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling.

The publication of Sacred Stories provides a glimpse into the lived spirituality of our ministry culture and has become a hallmark of Catholic Health Initiatives. These collections of stories are often seen in office areas and waiting rooms and are frequently used for reflections in meetings and prayer services.

A new feature in this edition seeks to enhance each reader’s reflective experience by the inclusion of a scripture passage or other sacred text before many of the stories, as well as suggested questions for reflection after each story.

Look for the new Sacred Stories book in your hospital. To request a copy, contact Mike Garrido’s office at 859.313.1717. The complete book is posted on our Web site. To read Sacred Stories online, visit www.SaintJosephHealthSystem.org (under “About Us”).

Kentucky Culture of Safety Survey—Complete survey by Friday, March 5!

Please take the time to complete a survey on Patient Safety Culture, as your feedback is essential to helping us achieve our goal of consistently delivering safe and effective care. Due to fast-approaching Joint Commission accreditation surveys across Kentucky, Saint Joseph Health System employees are asked to complete the survey by Friday, March 5. The Joint Commission surveyors will be interested in reviewing survey responses and action plans. Quickly access the survey via your LEARN account.

For each question, please select one response which is the most appropriate to you. If the question is not applicable to you, just skip the question. All results are anonymous and departments with less than ten members will be grouped with other departments to protect identities. Thank you in advance for your feedback! (Note: Saint Joseph - Martin employees have already completed this survey.)

Performance Culture Assessment—Complete survey March 8-April 5!

Beginning Monday, March 8, CHI will conduct a Performance Culture Assessment survey of all CHI employees. The survey replaces the Employee Climate Assessment survey. Employee responses to the Performance Culture Assessment will help Saint Joseph Health System identify and evaluate opportunities for improvement in its relationship with employees and leadership effectiveness. Saint Joseph Health System leadership might not know about these opportunities without the feedback received from this survey.

As of March 8, employees will begin receiving e-mails with a Web link to the survey and log in information. To access the survey, employees will need their Employee (Lawson) ID number. This will eliminate confusion on department codes and duplicate entries. Individual responses will remain anonymous. No one in CHI or Saint Joseph Health System will be able to view individual survey responses. Your Employee ID number is located under the “My Pay” tab of HR/Payroll Connection, on one of your pay stubs. The number is just above your name on the pay stub. (Note: Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling employees will follow a different process for completing the survey; listen for more details in your Daily Line-Up meetings).

The survey will be available March 8-April 5 and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Leaders will receive results for their respective groups in late spring to share with their teams and develop action plans. Last year, Saint Joseph Health System achieved nearly 100% participation within its facilities. This year, we hope to meet this level of participation.

All who take the survey will be eligible to participate in a drawing,
with individual prizes awarded in each facility!

New Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) Requirement

There is a new Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) requirement: surgical post-operative patients that do not have their Foleys discontinued on post-op day #1 or #2 must have a written MD order with a reason the Foley is to remain in. The order must be written by the end of post-op day #2. Saint Joseph Health System's data regarding Foley usage is published nationally. Questions can be directed to Dana Stevens, director of prevention/infection control, at 859.313.4715 or Marge McMillan, an RN, MSN, at 313.3229.

Newspaper Funding

The Volunteer Guild is very happy to offer Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East patients a free newspaper each weekday. The Guild pays $1,500 monthly in order to provide this patient service and it has proven to be a great patient-satisfier. Each day, volunteers hand-deliver these papers to the patients, leaving a few papers in the larger waiting rooms. The hope of the Guild is that each and every patient that desires a paper will receive one.

However, volunteers are finding that they are running out of papers before they are able to reach every patient. The Volunteer Guild kindly asks the staff at Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East not to take papers from the volunteer areas or redistribute papers from the areas where the volunteers are delivering them in order to help insure that our patients' needs are met. Thank you for your cooperation and support of the Guild's efforts.

Season of Lent

Lenten Reflection

The voice from the clouds tells Peter and his companions, “This is my Son, my beloved. Listen to him.” This is what we seek to do during this Lenten journey toward recovering our true self. Our identity and our mission is to embrace who we are as beloved daughters and sons of God, and to give witness to the grace of God’s redeeming and reconciling love. The message of the transfiguration is to stay the course, which is not easy to do when times are difficult. But in moments when our crosses seem most heavy, a voice in the clouds reminds us, “You are my beloved.” That is why we need those moments of grace that renew our spirits and refresh our souls; times that transfigure and transform us.

Ask yourself: What in my life is keeping me from being less than my true self?

Accolades

Congratulations to Saint Joseph - Martin's recent Employees of the Month: Mary Little, med-surg nurse manager, was the January winner and Sherry Shelton, laboratory team member, was the February winner. (Mary is pictured left, Sherry is pictured right.)

Daisy Award Winners at Saint Joseph East

Congratulations to Mia Howard, RN and Denise Alvey, RN for being named recipients of the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Saint Joseph East. Denise works in the Heart Institute Short Stay Unit (HISSU) and Mia works in Women's Care. Read comments from their nomination forms below.

Mia Howard, RN (front, in blue/black scrubs) celebrated her Daisy Award with fellow staff members in Women's Care at Saint Joseph East, along with members of the executive/management team.

Mia Howard, RN (left), Women's Care at Saint Joseph East, received a sculpture hand-carved by the Shona Tribe in Africa titled “A Healer’s Touch.” VP of Nursing LaJava Chenault (right) presented Mia with the unique gift.

Mia Howard, RN                                    Comments from her Nomination Form

"My daughter had extreme pain issues after a c-section; she was also putting the baby up for adoption. No one had been able to formulate a plan or combination of intervention to get her pain under control. When my daughter was transferred to post-partum, Mia immediately put together some ideas that the doctor agreed with. The plan was implemented and was successful.

Mia was very patient, compassionate and caring. I believe she treated us the way she would want to be treated herself. I would let Mia take care of me or any member of my family. She also communicated the plan very well to the other shifts which provided continuity of care that was so important for us. Additionally she addressed the emotional component of the adoption with a soft, very caring and compassionate style. Mia deserves a Daisy Award because she is an exceptional nurse and we are very happy we got to have her."

Denise Alvey, RN (front, holding sculpture) was joined by members of the HISSU team at Saint Joseph East in celebrating her Daisy Award.

Denise Alvey, RN (left), HISSU at Saint Joseph East, listened as Chris Mays, COO/CNO, read comments from her Daisy Award nomination citing why Denise is deserving of this award. President Ken Haynes (background) also joined in honoring Denise with this accolade.

Denise Alvey, RN                                    Comments from her Nomination Form

"Denise had a patient one day that was very frightened to have his cath. After going over his history with the gentleman, she realized that he was not only scared, but had some mental and emotional problems. She contacted the proper people and made them aware of the situation. I know this is standard, but she also spoke with the family and let them know that he could get help for his fears and emotional problems.

He was taken for evaluation after the heart cath, and I feel she saved his life because she noticed that he was 'out of sorts' and needed emotional help to the point he may hurt himself. This is a true gift when a nurse is aware that a patient isn't just scared, but truly needs help. I feel she was very quick to notice that this gentleman needed outside help. She is a wonderful 'critical thinking' nurse."

About the Daisy Award: The award is part of the Daisy Foundation’s national program to recognize the super-human efforts of nurses, and is in place throughout Saint Joseph Health System. Honorees receive a certificate of commendation, a Daisy Award pin, and a sculpture hand-carved by the Shona Tribe in Africa titled “A Healer’s Touch.” In addition, the nurse’s unit is treated to cinnamon buns.

How to Nominate a Nurse: You can complete and submit your nomination form for a deserving registered nurse online at www.SaintJosephNurses.org, or look for the Daisy Award brochures and nomination boxes throughout the hospitals. If you have questions, call Paula Keally at 859.313.4776. TODAY, February 26 is the deadline to submit your nominations for the next round of Daisy Award winners!

Tips from the “Working Green, Living Green” Team

Don't idle in your car. Idling wastes money and gas, and generates pollution. Except when in traffic, turn your engine off if you must wait for more than 30 seconds.

Be part of the recycling loop—purchase only items made from recycled materials.

Saint Joseph Health System's Working Green, Living Green team encourages you to "think green."
