Upcoming Surveys! Your Feedback is Needed

Kentucky Culture of Safety Survey

It is important for Saint Joseph Health System to learn how each of our facilities can better demonstrate excellence in patient safety. One of the best ways to discover areas that need improvement is to ask for your opinions.

Please take the time to complete a survey on Patient Safety Culture, as your feedback is essential to helping us achieve our goal of consistently delivering safe and effective care.

Due to fast-approaching Joint Commission accreditation surveys across Kentucky, employees are asked to complete the survey by March 5. The Joint Commission surveyors will be interested in reviewing survey responses and action plans. You can quickly access the survey via your LEARN account.

For each question, please select one response which is the most appropriate to you. If the question is not applicable to you, just skip the question. All results are anonymous and departments with less than ten members will be grouped with other departments to protect identities. Thank you in advance for your feedback. (Note: Saint Joseph - Martin is the only facility to have completed its survey process.)

Performance Culture Assessment

The new Performance Culture Assessment survey will begin March 8 for Saint Joseph Health System (and the entire CHI system). The Performance Culture Assessment replaces the previous Employee Climate Assessments. Employee responses to the Performance Culture Assessment provide valuable information. They are critical to helping Saint Joseph Health System identify and evaluate opportunities for improvement in its relationship with employees and leadership effectiveness. Saint Joseph leadership might not know about these opportunities without the feedback received from this survey.

This year, employees will need to log onto the survey using their Employee (Lawson) ID number. This will eliminate confusion on department codes and duplicate entries. Individual responses will remain anonymous. No one in CHI or Saint Joseph Health System will be able to view individual survey responses. Your Employee ID number is located under the “My Pay” tab of HR/Payroll Connection, on one of your pay stubs. The number is just above your name on the pay stub. (Note: Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling employees will follow a different process for completing the survey; listen for more details in your Daily Line-Up meetings).

Last year, Saint Joseph Health System achieved nearly 100% participation within its facilities. This year, we hope to meet this level of participation. Beginning March 8, you will receive a Web link and log in information for accessing the survey. The Performance Culture Assessment is shorter than the previous survey and takes approximately 15 minutes. The survey will close on April 5. All who take the survey will be eligible to participate in a drawing, with individual prizes awarded in each facility.

Confidential Bins Can Be Used for Recycling

Did you know the bins that are in place throughout Saint Joseph Health System (SJHS) facilities for the disposal of confidential information can also be used for recycling? The bins are provided by a company called “Cintas,” who recycles all paper that is collected in the bins and shredded through their Document Management Service.

In fiscal year 2009, their paper recycling saved over:
• 769,000 cubic yards of land fill space
• 4.36 million trees
• 21.5 million gallons of oil
• 1 billion kilowatts of energy
• 1.8 billion gallons of water
• 64 million pounds of carbon dioxide

To help them recycle even more paper, the “Working Green, Living Green” team at SJHS encourages you to drop all kinds of paper in the bins. For example, you can recycle labels, white/color paper, glossy paper, copy paper wrappers, file folders, manila folders, newspapers and magazines. SJHS is not charged by weight of items collected by Cintas, so please fill up the bins in your area with your paper waste (and not the trash cans!)

Season of Lent

Lenten Reflection

After his baptism by John in the Jordan, Jesus went out into the desert to receive a baptism by fire. This desert sojourn was also a ritual of purification: purifying his thoughts, his desires, and his intentions as he discerned how he would minister in a world that too often resembles the parched wasteland of the desert.

When Jesus embarked on his retreat into the desert, he was tempted and tested in the same ways we are, but in doing so he was showing us the way to recover our true self—a journey of self-discovery that will bring us a future full of hope.

Ask yourself: Am I willing to enter into the desert of self reflection to discover my true identity?

A Look Back

Peri-Anesthesia Nurse's Week

Mayor Jim Newberry signed a proclamation for Peri-Anesthesia Nurse's Week, February 1-7. The proclamation was presented to the PACU staff at Saint Joseph Hospital on February 4. Pictured (from left to right, back to front) are LaJava Chenault, Holly Moore, Linda Watt, Julie Helmick, Maire Patino, Patty Brandenburg, Donna Hagan, Saprina Fannin, Bonnie Chapleau, Christine Chewning, Kathy Davis, Ashlee Hall, Mike Hamilton, Bailey Kaplan, Chris Mays, Melody Edwards and President Ken Haynes.

Peri-anesthesia nurses practice in all phases of pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia care, ambulatory surgery, pain management, and special procedure areas. There are more than 57,000 peri-anesthesia registered nurses in the United States whose interests are represented by one of our nation’s premier specialty nursing organizations, the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses.

In the proclamation, the Mayor stated that peri-anesthesia nursing has been established as essential in the quality of health care and safety of patients in the hospital and ambulatory surgery settings, and asked that all residents of Lexington and Kentucky join him in honoring the peri-anesthesia nurses who care so unselfishly, and proficiently for us all.

Saint Joseph Health System Goes Blue Before UK Basketball game

In honor of American Heart Month and Valentine's Day, Saint Joseph Heart Institute offered blood pressure screenings and heart-healthy information Saturday, February 13 before the UK Men's basketball game against Tennessee. Members of the American Heart Association were also on hand, as Saint Joseph Health System regularly partners with the organization as the central Kentucky sponsor of their Go Red for Women program. Four hundred blood pressure screenings were given before the game.

Additionally, Saint Joseph Men's Health offered PSA screenings, which is a blood test that measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen in the blood to identify men at risk for prostate cancer.

At the Saint Joseph Health System booth, thousands of UK fans stopped by for goodies including Go Red for Women heart fans that were in a special UK blue (5,000 were given away) and Saint Joseph Health System-UK blue towels for waving at the game (2,000 were given away). Red dress pins and various marketing and educational materials were also distributed. Pictured above is Kathryn Hansen (right), director of diagnostic services.

Tip from the “Working Green, Living Green” Team

Take leftover plastic bags back to grocery stores where they are collected and reused to make plastic lumber.

(Or better yet, stop accepting plastic bags and bring reusable ones!)

Saint Joseph Health System's Working Green, Living Green team encourages you to "think green."
