Robotics Team Celebrated 500th Case & Addition of Second da Vinci Robot at Saint Joseph Hospital

As you learned in the last issue of inCommon, Saint Joseph Heart Institute is offering a remarkable new procedure that utilizes the da Vinci robotic technology in place at Saint Joseph Hospital to change the way heart surgery is performed—making open-chest surgery a closed-chest procedure, which means less pain, faster healing and a shorter hospital stay.

Saint Joseph Hospital now owns two da Vinci robots, allowing surgeons to perform a high volume of heart procedures. In addition to heart surgery, the advanced da Vinci robotic technology at Saint Joseph Hospital has offered less invasive options for prostate cancer treatment and gynecological surgery, as well as several other urologic and general surgical procedures, since August of 2007. In December 2009, the 500th da Vinci case was performed at Saint Joseph Hospital.

The robotics team at Saint Joseph Hospital celebrated its 500th case using the advanced da Vinci technology. Dr. Magdalene Karon (OB/GYN) performed the 500th case—a hysterectomy. With two da Vinci robots, Saint Joseph Hospital now can offer even more minimally invasive surgical procedures, from gynecological surgery, prostate removal surgery to heart surgery. The da Vinci allows patients to have a quicker, less painful recovery with optimal results.

Visit our new Web site, www.HeartCareBreakthrough.com, to learn more about da Vinci heart surgery, and to watch the new commercial.

Bruce Klockars Named Permanent President of Mount Sterling

Bruce Klockars has accepted the permanent position as president of Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, and will also retain his position as president of Flaget Memorial Hospital. As you are aware, Bruce has successfully served in a dual leadership role since last April, when he accepted the interim president position in Mount Sterling.

Bruce has more than 30 years of experience in health care leadership, and has served nearly 20 years in leadership roles within Saint Joseph Health System. He was chief operating officer at Saint Joseph Hospital from 1990 to 2000, before transitioning to the president of Flaget Memorial Hospital in 2000. During his tenure in Bardstown, Flaget Memorial Hospital has been named a 100 Top Hospital by Thomson Reuters four years in a row, and was named one of Kentucky’s Best Places to Work. Bruce also led the very successful project of garnering community support for the construction and eventual grand opening of Flaget’s new replacement hospital, which opened in 2005.

Since assuming the interim president role for Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, Bruce has led the construction project for the new Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, actively recruited new physicians to the campus, and worked closely with the Montgomery County emergency medical services on the upcoming launch of the wireless EKG program for heart patients.

Donate to the Haiti Relief Fund

Catholic Health Initiatives has contributed $40,000 to two Catholic organizations that have relief efforts and a humanitarian presence in the country of Haiti. The donation was sent to the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to provide basic health and human services to the people who have been affected by the damage from the earthquake. According to CRS, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The CMMB is a U.S.-based Catholic charity focused on global health care. Saint Joseph Health System employees can make additional contributions to these two important funds.

If you would like to offer your tax-deductible gift, please make your check payable to Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, with "Haiti Relief Fund" written in the memo and send to the Foundation office at One Saint Joseph Drive, Lexington, Kentucky 40504. You may also go online to www.SaintJosephFoundation.org and click on the link "Give to Saint Joseph," and then select “Make a Donation.” Select "Haiti Relief Fund" on the donation form. Standard Time and Attendance System Upgrade Feb. 18

Starting February 18, employees who use the Web-based Standard Time and Attendance system (Kronos) will see new features and changes to the look of the computer screens. Standard Time and Attendance tasks and processes will remain the same. Employees who clock in using time clocks or telephones will not see changes.

In the coming weeks, you will hear more about the upgrade. Job aids are being developed to help affected employees understand what is changing and what they need to do differently.

Employees: Employees should contact their manager for Kronos questions. Most employees
will not need to take action since the time clocks will not be affected by this upgrade.

Managers and Directors: Managers and Directors who have questions can call their facility's HR or Payroll Office once they have completed the LEARN Module which explains the
Kronos 6.1 upgrade. This module should be ready for viewing soon.

National Wear Red Day is Next Friday, February 5

February is American Heart Month, and the American Heart Association has designated its first Friday as National Wear Red Day—part of Go Red For Women.

In 2004, the association launched Go Red For Women, a campaign to alert women to the fact that heart disease is their number-one health threat. Now, many more know that heart disease is not only a man’s disease; indeed, it actually kills more women than men, about 455,000 per year, about one per minute, more than the next five leading causes of death, including all forms of cancer, combined.

In central Kentucky, the campaign is sponsored by Saint Joseph Health System. This year’s Go Red For Women theme is “Our Hearts. Our Choice.”

Over the years, Go Red For Women has grown into far more than an awareness program. Today it is a movement, stirring women to take action and fight heart disease and stroke.

One action the American Heart Association and Saint Joseph Health System urges everyone to take—men, women and children alike—is to wear red on February 5 as a show of support for this vital fight. A dress, a shirt, a necktie, a blazer, a pantsuit, a scarf ... anything, as long as it’s red, is perfectly fitting for this occasion. Watch for people in your community—friends, co-workers, the anchors on the news, store clerks, anyone and everyone—to be wearing red. For more information about Go Red For Women, visit www.GoRedForWomen.org.

Kentucky Wear Red Day events

People throughout the Bluegrass State will Go Red in one way or another. Here’s a snapshot of what is happening on Friday, February 5:

• Landmarks going red—Across the region, organizations have come aboard as supporters of Go Red For Women by lighting, accenting, and decorating their properties in red. This year’s roster of red landmarks includes the governor’s mansion and the floral clock at the Capitol.

At Saint Joseph Health System on Friday, February 5...

• Employees, volunteers and physicians will be wearing red! Certain facilities will be collecting donations in Administration; watch for details/events at your facility. You can always make a donation at www.GoRedForWomen.org.

Flaget Memorial Hospital: On February 5 at 3 p.m., there will be a celebration with heart-healthy snacks, a presentation about heart health and a fashion show in the Nazareth Conference Room A and B. Vote at lunch time (now through Feb. 3 in the cafeteria) for who you want to walk in the fashion show—the winners (women AND men) will model the latest styles of red dresses. Vote by donating your spare change, dollars or a check made payable to the American Heart Association (tax-deductible); each penny counts as a vote!

Saint Joseph Hospital: Split the pot! On February 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in front of the cafeteria, you can buy raffle tickets for a drawing to win half of the money raised on Wear Red Day. The other half will be donated to the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women.

Feedback

Letters to Saint Joseph - London

Special Angel

“I was at Saint Joseph - London during my sister’s recent surgery. Surgical Nurse, Chastity Robinson, was especially wonderful. My sister has had life threatening reactions during surgery and other procedures. Chastity provided support and reassurance to us throughout the day. We knew she was there watching over my sister. It felt like we had a special angel caring for my sister. God Bless.”

Compliment for ICU Staff

A gentleman called from Lexington to praise the care that is being given to his mother in ICU. He has been to Saint Joseph - London on several occasions to visit his mother and he is very impressed with the care given to her, as well as to other patients. He stated he has never witnessed the great care that his mother is being given. His mother told him this was the best hospital she has ever been in. He went on to say that it was his understanding that Saint Joseph - London is building a new facility and that he hoped it continued the same type of care that is currently given to patients now.

Thanks for making our patients and families feel so special!

Comments from Dana Brundon's Nomination Form

Dana Brundon, RN
OB/OR
Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling

"Dana has worked with us at Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling for many years. She has experience in OB and the OR, as well as typically covering PACU. Dana has been so flexible and accommodating. As a nurse, she has assisted in the ED when needed and has served from time to time as House Administrator (covering shifts where someone needed to be off). Dana embraces opportunities to learn and grow and has never hesitated to assist. We know how special Dana's heart is, as she played a pivotal role in starting the 'Walk To Remember,' which has become our annual OB Bereavement service. Held every year in October (for about six years), the Walk To Remember is a signature event for Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling in our community.

Dana's nomination for the Daisy Award is prompted by her recent service in the House Administrator role. In October, Dana was asked to assist with coverage when the full time House Administrator was side-lined with illness. One particular night, October 27, Dana had agreed to cover about half the shift from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. After arriving at work, Dana found she was needed in OB where two moms were going to need C-sections. One was an emergency and the other was a 'failure to progress.' At Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, we rarely have an emergency C-section. Even the 'failure to progress' C-sections are not very common. So, to have two after-hours C-sections on the same night is most unusual.

Dana went into high gear and assembled the OR team, assisted both the OB staff and the OR in getting everything ready, and participated in the peri-operative care of these moms. Our OB physician commented that he couldn't believe on this very night we had Dana covering. She was the perfect nurse to have on duty, someone with both OB and OR experience, who knew how to make things happen and made sure it all went smoothly.

Our OB staff was thrilled to have the support. Dana's skills are well respected and everyone was glad to have such a competent nurse assisting with these two cases.
It was such a busy night, Dana stayed the entire 12 hour shift. She made sure the patients were alright and the other areas of the hospital were doing well, rather than leave.

The Lord works in mysterious ways. At Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, on the night of October 27, He made sure two moms and their new babies had Dana Brundon to help care for them. We are blessed to have Dana as one of our very special, very caring, and very talented RNs." Cinda Fluke, CNO

Tip from the “Working Green, Living Green” Team

Change a light bulb this weekend! If a quarter of the households in the United States replaced one incandescent with one CFL, it would save as much CO2 as planting 257,215 acres of forest.

Tip: CFLs with a Kelvin temperature between 3,000k and 3,500k will give off the familiar warm glow of incandescents.

Saint Joseph Health System's Working Green, Living Green team encourages you to "think green."
