2010 Mileage Reimbursement Changes

The IRS has announced the 2010 standard mileage rates for business use of a personal vehicle. For 2010, the rates have been lowered to reflect a slight decrease in the cost of gasoline compared to a year ago. As of January 1, 2010, the standard mileage rates for the business use of a car (including vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be 50 cents per mile for business miles driven. This decreases the rate for business miles by 5 cents from 2009. Annual rate changes are based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile, conducted by Runzheimer International, an independent contractor.

Letters to Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling & Saint Joseph - Berea

The following note is written by a patient's mother, appreciative of the care she received at Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling.

“I brought our son for an echocardiogram recently. We were so nervous! And then came Roger (Roger Foster, Echo Tech)... so calming, comforting, informative and an all around wonderful person. We appreciated him so much!” From a patient’s mom

The following note is from a Saint Joseph - Berea patient who
benefitted from the Lights for Life Emergency Medical Fund.

“A couple of years ago, I was in the hospital there. I didn’t have the money for my medicine I needed when I went home. You all gave me enough to last me until I could get it for myself. Thanks. I think Berea is the best!” With her note, this patient sent a $10 bill to the Lights for Life program.

Comments from Dow Cobb's Nomination Form

Chaplain Dow Cobb was nominated for the Heart of Saint Joseph Award by Becky Peterson, Unit Manager of 3B at Saint Joseph Hospital.

Her nomination comments follow:

I would like to nominate Chaplain Dow Cobb for the Heart of Saint Joseph Award. He might say what he does is just his job, much like staffing, schedules, and budgets are my job. We are all important for patient care. Dow and chaplains like him deal with God questions and ultimate concerns of death, dying and what the patient believes in or relies on for strength. What follows is a sacred story.

We had a fifty-six-year-old male patient admitted with a history of stage three esophageal adenocarcinoma diagnosed earlier in the year. He had undergone radiation and chemotherapy in the spring in hope for a cure. By fall, the tumor had reoccurred and he had extensive (and what turned out to be palliative) surgery, which was followed by eighty-three days in the hospital.

Dow established a relationship with the patient and as time went by, discovered that the family had delayed telling the patient that the cancer had returned. They did not think he could handle it while he healed from the surgery. The longer the family delayed this communication, the more difficult it was to discuss a plan of care or a plan for discharge. Dow spoke with family members using every avenue available to assist the family in letting the patient in on his diagnosis. He talked with them about a patient's rights, the ethical considerations of keeping the diagnosis from the patient and the right of the patient to decide how to spend the last days of his life. The family remained firm that the patient was not ready to hear this news…not yet. Even with this "gag order," Dow developed a relationship with the patient. He visited regularly to listen and to provide some company during the long days. As the patient progressed in his healing, other problems arose that indicated metastatic disease.

Dow continued to be persistent that the patient be told his diagnosis. With what could have been divine inspiration, he tried one last thing. He contacted the nurse who worked with the oncologist who had signed off on the case. The oncologist returned, reviewed the recent records and told the patient that there was no more treatment for the cancer and that he had maybe four months to live.

Later, it was announced that the patient would be discharged to go home with Hospice care. That was good news…he had been here 83 days. At the end of the meeting, Dow shared some of his journey with us. He said that the patient had been so grateful to finally know; that his brother died suddenly at age 40 and never had a chance to make peace with those in his life. He was glad that he had the opportunity to say the things that needed to be said, to make peace with family and God.

The most moving part of the conversation was that the patient called it a gift to have this knowledge. With this in place and a relationship formed already, Dow and the patient continued to make their journey together with freedom and honesty.

Chaplaincy has a sacred purpose in health care. I nominate Dow Cobb for the Heart of Saint Joseph Award because this is only one of many stories he could tell. It is just his job. Dow could have waited this one out. He never gave up on getting the right thing for his patient.

Reverence, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence—it is all in the story.

Saint Joseph Took Part in 'Million Nurse Global Caring Project'

On January 1 at noon Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East and Saint Joseph - Jessamine took part in the kick-off of the Million Nurse Global Caring Project sponsored by Dr. Jean Watson, distinguished professor and nursing theorist from the Watson Caring Institute. The project included nurses from around the globe stopping and saying a meditation at noon to begin the celebration of the International Year of the Nurse (read the meditation below).

This also took place at Saint Joseph East with Sr. Laura Hardage, Dianna Davis, RN, clinical manager on 4 Med-Surg, and Becky Rose, RN, clinical manager on 3 Telemetry. Kim Dalton recited the meditation at Saint Joseph - Jessamine.

Healing Touch Retreat in Berea

Saint Joseph - Berea (SJB) directors recently attended a retreat that focused on healing touch, a major component of the hospital's new Optimal Healing Environment Project that aims at complementing traditional medical care with art and alternative medicine practices in a beautiful, serene environment.

Catholic Health Initiatives' vice president of theology and ethics, Carl Middleton, D. Min. (M.Div., M.A., M.R.E.) was integral in developing the retreat for healing and implementing an integrated healing care plan (“Person-Centered Healing Plan”) that will promote total health care through the use of healing touch, which brings the ministry of healing to the bedside. In December, Middleton began what will be a year-long healing training with staff members from many SJB departments in just this type of care. Kathryn Hansen, BS, REEGT, CPC is Director of Diagnostic Services for Saint Joseph Health System and received her credentialing under the direction of Dr. Middleton and CHI. She taught techniques at the retreat and spoke of her experiences of practicing healing touch in a clinical domain for many years and witnessing the impact on healing and spiritual care.

You can read more about Saint Joseph - Berea's new initiative in the January/February issue
of Common Thread, which will arrive in your home mail beginning this week.

Above, left: Retreat attendees learned how to assess physical and spiritual health. Above, right: Kathryn Hansen demonstrated how caregivers can use someone's energy to promote self care.

Saint Joseph - Berea Mission Leader Flora Washburn shared a prayer for healing.

Caregivers learned how the art of caring involves human touch to promote healing.

Elementary School Students Help Flaget Visitors Feel at Ease

The photo below shows several pieces of writing from students at Bloomfield Elementary School posted in the Emergency Department (ED) at Flaget Memorial Hospital in Bardstown.
Below is an explanation written on one of the pages:

"Don't Be Nervous!"

"After reading an informational story about health care workers, second graders at Bloomfield Elementary School were assigned the following task: to write a paragraph which teaches visitors to the emergency department about the workers there.

The goal of the assignment was to teach the reader about the health care workers so that the reader would feel more at ease when visiting the ED. These students used what they learned from the text to produce very informative writing pieces that have been posted at Flaget Memorial Hospital's ED in Bardstown. Targeted to their peers, these works should comfort the young and young at heart!"

Celebrating Christmas in Martin

Saint Joseph - Martin employees enjoyed several festivities during the holiday season.
They shared the following pictures.

Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

During celebrations on Monday, January 18 to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., people of all ages and backgrounds will come together to improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to the “Beloved Community” that Dr. King envisioned. Dr. Martin Luther King devoted his life’s work to causes of equality and social justice. He taught that through nonviolence and service to one another, problems such as hunger and homelessness, prejudice and discrimination can be overcome.

Catholic Health Initiatives’ (CHI) and Saint Joseph Health System’s mission to emphasize human dignity and social justice as we move toward the creation of healthier communities echoes Dr. King’s teachings. As one of the nation’s largest faith-based health care systems, CHI has the commitment and ability to go beyond the provision of quality health care. CHI and its facilities work to protect the vulnerable; to encourage participation in the political process; and to safeguard the environment. Advocacy for these and other issues of social justice flows naturally from CHI’s system-wide commitment to building healthy communities.

In collaboration with individual citizens, community organizations and other providers of health and human services, CHI creates values-based, forward-looking models of community health. We have several programs dedicated to this ministry, including the Mission and Ministry Fund, Direct Community Investments and community benefit.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”
