Women’s Hospital at Saint Joseph East Opens March 29
Saint Joseph East (SJE) will open its new Women’s Hospital on Monday, March 29. Mothers and babies in the hospital’s maternity unit will be transported to the new addition dedicated exclusively to women’s services. They won’t have to travel far, as the new 60,000-square-foot facility is located next door and connected by pedway. On March 29, new patients will be admitted directly to the Women’s Hospital. The Women’s Hospital will accommodate the enormous maternity growth that SJE has experienced during recent years and be the first of its kind in Kentucky, providing the latest in maternity care. The $60 million facility will house labor/delivery/recovery rooms, neonatal intensive care, a large nursery and all other aspects of maternity care. It will have a capacity of 3,000 deliveries annually. The Women’s Hospital will feature patient-centered design and amenities, with the entire family’s comfort in mind. For example, there will be a special waiting area for expecting dads and an education center, gift shop and courtyard on the ground floor. Physician offices will also be located on the ground floor. Throughout the facility will be original artwork by local artists with a common theme surrounding mothers, babies and families.

Contact your HR office with any questions. Attention Saint Joseph Health System RNs and LPNs! A new LEARN survey has been developed to obtain important information that is necessary to complete the Magnet application. Please take five minutes to complete information about yourself regarding certifications, education and community service. The deadline to complete the survey is March 23, 2010. For those nurses who are working in non-clinical roles, please share your information via the following link: http://www.quia.com/quiz/2263338.html. Also in this issue you'll read how, at 92 years young, retired physician Dr. Everett Schaeffer is a shining example for all of us to live “greener” every day as he operates a one-man recycling program that brings him to Saint Joseph - Berea twice a week. The new issue will arrive in your home mail beginning next week. Don't forget to try your luck at the Reader Reward challenge. In this issue, we're giving away three $75 Visa gift cards. Next week, March 14-20, is National Cover the Uninsured Week, a project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which hopes to raise awareness that forty-six million Americans are uninsured and nine million of them are children. These statistics do not include the number of families who are underinsured, which means that they have health insurance that is unaffordable due to factors such as increasingly high deductibles. One of our advocacy priorities is affordable health insurance coverage and access to safe, high-quality health care services for every individual, beginning with most vulnerable populations. Therefore, throughout next week, Saint Joseph Health System will be providing information about the reality of people who are uninsured in our country. Lenten Reflection Jesus said to Nicodemus: "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life." For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. (John 3:14-21) Moses lifted up the bronze serpent in the desert because people were dying from a plague of snakes. He used the very symbol of the evil they were experiencing to free them from the evil. In the same way, Jesus was nailed to a cross – a symbol of brutality and torture that becomes the symbol of our liberation and salvation – and in this action of being raised on the cross, he drew the poison of sin and death from our lives. When Jesus was lifted up on the cross, he drew all peoples to the very heart of God. Ask yourself: Am I willing to face the demons that threaten to enslave me? How am I progressing on the journey to better health, to wholeness and to holiness? |
