26 Stoplights Closer

There are 26 stoplights between Saint Joseph - Jessamine (SJJ) in Nicholasville and the closest Lexington Hospital — a long drive if you need immediate medical care, but the former route for many Jessamine County residents. This striking statistic is currently being advertised in various newspapers.

When SJJ opened on Jan. 2, Jessamine County’s long wait for a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week emergency care facility was over and residents breathed a big sigh of relief knowing quality care is now just around the corner.

SJJ features emergency services, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services and offices for physicians and staff. It is located at 1250 Keene Road in Nicholasville, at the corner of US 27 and Route 169 on the Nicholasville bypass.

More about the 'Spark4Life' Challenge:

The Spark4Life challenge, hosted by Saint Joseph Corporate Health Services, will require participants to eat healthier, be more active and seek knowledge on how to live healthier. The challenge utilizes a free online weight loss and wellness program called SparkPeople. Acting as a virtual personal trainer, the SparkPeople program provides you with an individualized plan and the motivation you need to reach your unique health and fitness goals. The program starts with a specific “prescribed” plan and, over time, it teaches and motivates you to integrate healthier habits into your life, helping you to stop “dieting” for good and start living a healthier lifestyle.

Here's how it will work:

• At www.SparkPeople.com, you will sign up on your facility team and then customize your unique account.

• Your goal is to earn SparkPoints. You can earn these points by exercising, eating healthy, reading articles about health, etc.

• Throughout the 12 weeks, you will update your account and track your progress using the 24-hour Web site.

• By participating in the program, you'll have access to nutrition and fitness tools, support and resources that are completely free. Examples include a personalized diet and exercise plan; daily meal plans, recipes and shopping lists; a calorie and nutrition tracker; and answers and advice from registered dietitians and certified personal trainers.

• Participants who remain in the program at week 12 will be eligible for prize drawings. They must submit their SparkPoints print-out at each facility to their wellness committee representative and it must show activity through May 16. Those who turn in their points will be eligible for prize drawings as well as the cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

At each facility, the top three employees with the most
SparkPoints will win $500, $250 and $100, respectively!

A Compliment for Saint Joseph - London

Saint Joseph - London's administration received a call about the care given to a recent 79-year-old patient. The patient's daughter said, "My mother could not have been treated any better anywhere else ... she was treated so well in each department that she came in contact with.” The caller said her mother was very ill at the time and that any time she needed anything, someone was right there to take care of her. The family wanted to make sure that everyone at Saint Joseph - London knew how much they appreciated her care.

Season of Lent

Lenten Reflection

(Mark 9:2-8) Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.

The voice from the clouds tells Peter and his companions, “This is my Son, my beloved. Listen to him.” This is what we seek to do during this Lenten journey toward recovering our true self. Our identity and our mission is to embrace who we are as beloved daughters and sons of God, and to give witness to the grace of God’s redeeming and reconciling love. The message of the transfiguration is to stay the course, which is not easy to do when times are difficult. But in moments when our crosses seem most heavy, a voice in the clouds reminds us, “You are my beloved.” That is why we need those moments of grace that renew our spirits and refresh our souls; times that transfigure and transform us.

Ask yourself: What in my life is keeping me from being less than my true self?

A Look Back

50th Anniversary of the First Open Heart Surgery in Central Kentucky

Mar. 3, 2009 marked the 50th anniversary of the first open heart surgery in central Kentucky, performed at Saint Joseph Hospital by Dr. Richard R. Crutcher and a team of 15 people. To celebrate this milestone, employees, physicians and executive team members of Saint Joseph Hospital honored Dr. Crutcher, 96, and a few of the original surgery team members who assisted him in 1959.

Dr. Richard Crutcher (right) and his team trained for nine months prior to the surgery. The patient was an 8-year-old boy with a congenital heart defect. The case was more difficult than was anticipated, but successful. Pictured with Dr. Crutcher are Dr. James B. Holloway (left), who assisted him, and nurses (back row, left to right) Peggy McFadden, Shirlie Isaacs and Mary Ellen Amato.

A few of Saint Joseph Hospital's current cardiothoracic surgeons joined Dr. Crutcher (seated in center), Dr. James B. Holloway (seated left) and Dr. Harold Rosenbaum (seated right), the radiologist who performed the cardiac cath, to help celebrate their open heart surgery in 1959—the first in central Kentucky.

Dr. James B. Holloway (seated left), Dr. Crutcher (seated in center) and Dr. Harold Rosenbaum (seated right) were surrounded by family members to help celebrate. Included in this picture (back row, fifth from left) is Louis Hillenmeyer, a nephew of Dr. Crutcher and a former Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation board member and chairman.

Dr. Andy Moore (left), a beloved plastic surgeon at Saint Joseph Hospital, attended the celebration and visited with Dr. James B. Holloway, who assisted on the first open heart surgery case in central Kentucky.
