Milestones

50th Anniversary of the First Open Heart Surgery in Lexington

March 3, 2009, will mark the 50th anniversary of the first open heart surgery in Lexington, performed at Saint Joseph Hospital (SJH) by Dr. Richard R. Crutcher and a team of 15 people. The team trained for nine months prior to the surgery. The patient was an 8-year-old boy with a congenital heart defect. The case was more difficult than was anticipated, but successful. The Sisters kept a prayer vigil in the chapel during the surgery. At that time in 1959, SJH was located in Lexington’s downtown district, on West Second Street.

Dr. Richard R. Crutcher, 97, will attend a celebration at SJH next Tuesday, Mar. 3 to mark this milestone; everyone is invited to help celebrate between 2-4 p.m. in the front lobby.

Pictured is an article that appeared in The Lexington Leader in 1959 titled, “Lexington Boy, 8, Is Recovering From Delicate Heart Operation.” The article described Danny Wilson’s congenital heart defect, how the heart-lung machine made open-heart surgery possible, and the optimism of Danny’s doctor about his recovery.

Wellness

Get Sparked!

Want to lose weight? Get fit? Have more energy? Join Saint Joseph Health System's "Spark4Life" Challenge!

Saint Joseph Health System will launch an employee wellness initiative the week of Mar. 16 called "Spark4Life." Employees throughout our hospitals will compete for cash prizes during a 12-week challenge that will test their willingness to take action to improve their lives. The challenge, hosted by Corporate Health Services, will require participants to eat healthier, be more active and seek knowledge on how to live healthier. This challenge is all about taking small steps that will add up to big results and an overall lifestyle change!

The best part is that this challenge utilizes a free online weight loss and wellness program called SparkPeople. Acting as a virtual personal trainer, the SparkPeople program provides you with an individualized plan and the motivation you need to reach your unique health and fitness goals. The program starts with a specific “prescribed” plan and, over time, it teaches and motivates you to integrate healthier habits into your life, helping you to stop “dieting” for good and start living a healthier lifestyle.

Here's how it will work (beginning Mar. 16):

• At www.SparkPeople.com, you will sign up on your hospital team and then customize your unique account.

• Your goal is to earn Spark points. You can earn these points by exercising, eating healthy, reading articles about health, etc.

• Throughout the 12 weeks, you will update your account and track your progress using the 24-hour Web site.

• By participating in the program, you'll have access to nutrition and fitness tools, support and resources that are completely free. Examples include a personalized diet and exercise plan; daily meal plans, recipes and shopping lists; a calorie and nutrition tracker; and answers and advice from registered dietitians and certified personal trainers.

• At each hospital, the top three employees with the most Spark points will win $500, $250 and $100, respectively.

LEARN MORE at the "Spark4Life" kick-off event at your hospital the week of Mar. 16. Watch for more details soon. Get ready to get sparked!

Why is Saint Joseph "sparking” its employees into action?

Saint Joseph Health System is committed to improving the health of its employees. As a health care provider with a mission to create healthier communities, it's only logical that the mission first start with supporting a culture of healthy living among our employees. Based on the results of recent health screenings conducted at Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East, Saint Joseph - Berea and Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, 72.7% of employees are overweight compared to the national average of 64.5%. When it comes to heart disease, 5.6% of employees are affected compared to the national average of 3.1%. In every category, employees showed a higher incidence of health problems compared to the local market and national averages. Additionally, employees surveyed had more family members afflicted with disease in every category compared to the local market and national averages. Click here to view the findings.

'Lettuce' Eat Right

On Mar. 2 at Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph - Berea, and Mar. 30 at Saint Joseph East, Nutritional Services will launch a new healthy initiative in the cafeterias called “Lettuce Eat Right.” Healthier menu options will be introduced, along with the availability of nutritional information. Items that are deemed healthy will be identified to help in your selection process and goals of living healthier. As you "spark" into action for the "Spark4Life" challenge (see above), you'll be inspired by the new menu choices. Look for other exciting new changes in the cafeterias including the transition to a “greener” eating environment.

Below is Nutritional Services’ New Vision Statement (SJH, SJE, SJB):
Our Nutritional Services department understands that our food production and service has a significant impact on our patients, employees, and on our community as a whole. We are committed to providing fresh, healthy, appetizing meals to our patrons while remembering to be conscious of our environment.

Our goals are as follows:
• To become an active role model for nutritious food choices and health behaviors
• To promote fresh, locally grown ingredients that support our communities
• To ensure that food waste is minimized and that material usage is limited
• To utilize products that are environmentally friendly to our ecosystem

Together we will promote health and wellness while being protective of our community.

Recognition

Heart of Saint Joseph Award

Congratulations to Gayle Green for being named the March/April Heart of Saint Joseph Award recipient at Saint Joseph - Berea (SJB). Gayle, who works in the facilities department, is known as the "go-to" person for many employees because her approach to problem-solving is well recognized. She is known to be fair, helpful, resourceful and compassionate.

Photo: SJB President Greg Gerard presented Gayle with her award.

On her nomination form are several examples of why Gayle was selected for this award. A colleague said, "Gayle brings a strong and quiet faith with her to work. Some people talk about faith all the time and some live that faith every day. Gayle is one who lives her faith and demonstrates kindness, understanding and love at all times. She never loses her patience at work or if she does she does not show it. She does what needs to be done no matter what job she is given and she does it cheerfully. She is upbeat and by example encourages others to approach their work in the same manner. She supports fellow employees with prayer.

"Gayle is a loving person who shows the same compassion to all that she has for her own family. She is a pillar of strength in a family that has had its share of health problems. She helps her mother and sisters in every way she can. She is a loving and supportive mother. Gayle now works at a desk and gives exemplary customer service to staff and outside vendors. It is a shame she is not on the front lines sharing her attitude and approach with our patients and their families."

Gayle shows excellence in her work by her approach to helping to make her department run smoothly. A colleague said, "She started at Berea Hospital in housekeeping. Her managerial skills were identified early; she managed housekeeping for awhile and now assists with the day-to-day runnings of the facilities department. She is resourceful and creative as she problem-solves. She has good common sense. She is prompt. She has follow-through. She is a great asset to her department and to the hospital."

The Heart of Saint Joseph Award is currently in place at Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East and Saint Joseph - Berea. Nominate a deserving co-worker at www.SaintJosephHealthSystem.org ("Recognition & Awards" under "Saint Joseph Employees").

Season of Lent

Lenten Reflection

After his baptism by John in the Jordan, Jesus went out into the desert to receive a baptism by fire. This desert sojourn was also a ritual of purification: purifying his thoughts, his desires, and his intentions as he discerned how he would minister in a world that too often resembles the parched wasteland of the desert. When Jesus embarked on his retreat into the desert, he was tempted and tested in the same ways we are, but in doing so he was showing us the way to recover our true self—a journey of self-discovery that will bring us a future full of hope.

Ask yourself: Am I willing to enter into the desert of self reflection to discover my true identity?

A Look Back

Ken Haynes (top photo), president of Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East and Saint Joseph - Jessamine, was overwhelmed with the turnout for the first ever President’s Circle luncheon on Jan. 22 in the Keeneland Health Education Center. Members were recognized with a President’s Circle Pin. More than 40 persons attended the event and almost 80 became members of this inaugural program. The 2008 employee campaign had nearly a 50% increase in giving at the $500 or more level, with the implementation of this new program. Through the President’s Circle, almost $60,000 was raised to support mission and outreach efforts, including the Patient and Family Assistance Fund, Nursing and Allied Health Scholarships and the Saint Joseph Free Clinic, among others.
