Saint Joseph - London Named One of the Nation's
Top Cardiovascular Hospitals

Heart disease is still the nation’s number one killer, and Saint Joseph - London is providing members of its community with access to national benchmark-level cardiovascular services, particularly in improved survival rates, fewer complications and reduced cost. The hospital has just been named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® for cardiovascular care by Thomson Reuters … for the second year in a row! Only one other hospital in Kentucky made this national list along with Saint Joseph - London (Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah).

Thomson Reuters’ annual study—100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks—examined the performance of 971 hospitals by analyzing clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery or percutaneous cardiovascular interventions (PCI) such as angioplasties.

The study, in its 11th year, found that the 100 Top Hospitals cardiovascular winners have:

• 17 percent lower mortality rates for heart attack patients.
• 10 percent lower mortality rates for heart failure patients.
• 27 percent lower mortality for bypass surgery patients.
• 22 percent lower mortality following PCI.
• Fewer post-operative complications—99 percent of patients were
   complication-free.
• Close to 12 percent shorter average hospital stay.
• 12 percent lower cost per case.

You can read more about the study results at www.100tophospitals.com.

This award is on the heels of Saint Joseph - London’s high HealthGrades’ ratings—Saint Joseph - London is the number one hospital in Kentucky for overall cardiac care and cardiac surgery and among the top five percent in the nation according to a study issued October 13 by HealthGrades.

Need Help with Access, Excel or Want to Know More?

Brett Mason is a computer programmer whose primary strength is Microsoft Access databases. He's created databases for a probation agency with 20 branches across Kentucky, databases for manufacturing companies, and databases for the Lexington City Government—including a large inmate-tracking system at the county jail. Soon he will be teaching Excel and Access classes at

Advent

Prepare to Welcome Jesus

With Christmas soon arriving, we prepare to welcome Christ Jesus, Messiah into the bustle of our lives and the hard-to-find moments of solitude. Into our homes and situations along with friends and families we prepare to welcome Christ Jesus, Messiah. Into our hearts, and those often hidden parts of our lives we prepare to welcome Christ Jesus, Messiah. For beneath the surface of your story is an inescapable fact, You entered this world as vulnerable as any one of us in order to nail that vulnerability to the cross. Our fears, our insecurities and our sins all that can separate us from God exchanged by your Grace for Love. We cannot comprehend the reasoning only marvel that Salvation comes to us through a baby born in a stable, and reaches out to a world in need. In this season of anticipation we prepare to welcome Christ Jesus, Messiah.

“What child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste to bring him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary!”

Comments from Angie's Nomination Form

Angie Henley, RN
Medical-Surgical, Saint Joseph East

"Angie has addressed all of my needs in a compassionate and professional manner, especially concerning my pain management needs. She has gone above and beyond in her care in providing me with all the information I have needed."

"This may sound very vague, but I have been profoundly affected by her ability to be present to me as a patient and also, as a health care professional. One can tell that she loves what she does and views nursing as more than a career, rather, as a way of providing the highest level of compassion with people who are at their most vulnerable moments (such as myself right now!)"

"I believe Angie's care, compared to my peers and my caregivers has been amazing! There is not a particular incident to relate, just that, as I've said, she's truly a nurse's nurse!"

Angie Henley, RN with members of the 4th floor medical-surgical staff, executive team and Daisy Award committee at Saint Joseph East.

Comments from Alesha's Nomination Form

Alesha Pennington, RN
Labor & Delivery, Saint Joseph East

"In Labor & Delivery (L&D) we have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on whole families by being there from the start. As L&D nurses, we do not take this challenge lightly and attempt to make each delivery memorable for that patient and her family. Sometimes the memories are more dramatic than we expect.

Alesha works L&D, APU (antepartum unit), postpartum, nursery, or wherever the need is the greatest. She will graciously switch units mid-shift if that is what is necessary to best care for our patients. It was a day like this that Alesha was pulled to APU. Since we have long outgrown our space, currently our APU is two floors above our L&D.

Alesha had a full patient load on APU and was sitting at the nurses' station, trying to catch up on her charting. She noticed a tracing on our central surveillance system that was out of normal range. Much like a telemetry unit that monitors several patients' EKG tracings at the desk, we monitor several fetal monitor strips at once. Even with the geographic difference between the two units, both areas trace at each nurses' station. As always we take responsibility for all fetal tracing not just our own.

Alesha noticed what looked to be signs of distress on a tracing from L&D. The fetal tracing was dipping down below 100 bpm (bradycardic for a fetus) and showing no signs of recovery. Alesha quickly picked up the phone and called the L&D station to make sure someone was aware of the tracing. When there was no answer after a couple of rings, Alesha knew she needed to act.

She ran down two flights of stairs and into the patient's room. She found that the patient was crowning and ready for delivery (her nurse was currently in another delivery). Alesha activated the delivery room team by calling the nursery and the doctor from the bedside. However, the patient progressed so quickly that Alesha had to deliver the baby. She provided immediate care for mom and baby and both were without injury. It was her quick action and vigilance that made a safe delivery possible. The patient and family were very grateful for Alesha's care and now have a bond with her that will last a lifetime."

Alesha Pennington, RN with members of the Women's Care team, executive team and Daisy Award committee at Saint Joseph East.

Comments from Sherri's Nomination Form

Sherri Shelby, RN
CCH, Saint Joseph East

"This is a wonderful young lady who is very intelligent and very compassionate. She made me feel as though I had a great friend from the beginning. When I was very emotional about my husband, she was there for me. She went beyond her call of duty just to talk with me. She got me off the floor to get some fresh air just to vent, and have a break. To be a new vibrant nurse speaks a lot for me.

She is always willing to help my wonderful husband in many ways. She is also very skillful as many other nurses at this hospital. I think she will never lose her love and compassion for her patients. I sincerely think Sherri deserves this award and hope she always stays the same because I feel as though she treats my husband and myself as her own family. God bless her and every other caring nurse here at Saint Joseph East."

Seton Home Health Receives Quality Recognition

Seton Home Health, a service of Saint Joseph - London, has been selected for the "2009 Best of London Award” in the Home Health Service category by the United States Commerce Association (USCA). The USCA's "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the United States Commerce Association and data provided by third parties.

A Look Back

Flaget Cancer Center Groundbreaking

A groundbreaking ceremony was held December 10 for the Flaget Cancer Center. The new, full-service Flaget Cancer Center will be added to the medical office building on Flaget Memorial Hospital's campus. The center will offer a first for the community: radiation cancer therapy.

This treatment will be delivered through cutting-edge technology: the Elekta Synergy machine, a digital accelerator that allows clinicians to see the tumor at the precise moment of treatment. Older machines use imaging studies done several days in advance of treatment. Under the old system, between the time the imaging is done and the patient receives radiation, tumors can shift position. The Elekta Synergy has the ability to image during treatment, which targets a tumor more precisely, spares healthy tissue, and results in fewer side effects and greater comfort for patients.

The radiation machine that will be installed at Flaget is the only Elekta in Kentucky equipped with this Precise Beam Dynamic technology. Construction on the addition that will house radiation equipment, and on the renovation of the part of the medical office building that will house private chemotherapy rooms, is expected to be completed by summer of 2010.

At the Dec. 10 groundbreaking for the Flaget Cancer Center, shovelers were, left to right, State Rep. David Floyd; Jacob Vincent, M.D., president of the Flaget Medical Staff; Flaget President Bruce Klockars; Suzanne Gude of the Kentucky Cancer Program; Flaget Oncology Nurse/Supervisor Pat Russman; Greg Burkott, field representative for Congressman Brett Guthrie; Monte Martin, M.D., medical oncologist; Bardstown Mayor Dick Heaton; Alice King, president of the Flaget Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; Alice Adams, SCN; Larry Hicks, chair of the Flaget Council; Gene Woods, CEO of Saint Joseph Health System; and Twyman Clements, cancer survivor.
