Saint Joseph - Jessamine Brings Care Closer to Home

On January 2, Jessamine County's long wait for a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week emergency care facility was over when Saint Joseph - Jessamine RJ Corman Ambulatory Care Center proudly opened its doors to the public, marking a milestone for the community.

Country music star Eddie Montgomery, left, President Ken Haynes, SJHS Board Member Miller Hoffman, SJHS CEO Gene Woods, RJ Corman, Secretary Janie Miller (Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services) and Administrator Chris Bowe enthusiastically prepared to cut the ribbon during the grand opening ceremony.

In late December, several hundred people took a sneak peek at the new facility during an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony. Staff members provided guided tours through the 60,000-square-foot facility which not only features superior emergency services, but diagnostic imaging, laboratory services and offices for physicians and staff. Community members commented on the well-planned layout and design of the facility and their newfound peace of mind with having it so close to home.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Saint Joseph benefactor RJ Corman, of RJ Corman Railroad Group, shared a striking statistic of the need for such a medical facility in Jessamine County. He said there are 26 stop lights between Saint Joseph - Jessamine in Nicholasville and Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington— a long drive if you need immediate medical care, but the former route for many Jessamine County residents.

At the grand opening, Saint Joseph Health System CEO Gene Woods thanked the community leaders of Jessamine County who supported the development of the ambulatory care center, including Mayor Russ Meyer and Jessamine County Judge-Executive Neal Cassity. Also sharing their enthusiasm for a new beginning of medical care for Jessamine County were Chris Bowe, the administrator of Saint Joseph - Jessamine, Ken Haynes, president, and Secretary Janie Miller with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Nicholasville native Eddie Montgomery, of the country music group Montgomery Gentry, also shared in the grand opening celebration, which was attended by Jessamine County residents, community leaders and health care professionals.

Saint Joseph - Jessamine is located at 1250 Keene Road in Nicholasville, at the corner of US 27 and Route 169 on the Nicholasville bypass. The general information number is 859.887.4100.

Construction Projects Restart

As you are aware, Saint Joseph Health System placed three major construction projects (Saint Joseph East, Saint Joseph - London and Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling) on hold in late November. This decision was made after CHI completed an analysis of the current construction projects across the national system, and an evaluation of the current national economic situation, combined with CHI’s budget performance year-to-date. The renovation at Saint Joseph Hospital, and the completion and opening of Saint Joseph - Jessamine continued as scheduled.

CHI has now released the three projects from hold status, and they will resume in various capacities. Beginning immediately, Saint Joseph - London and Saint Joseph East will resume the construction process, and Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling will continue the design phase for a replacement facility. CHI has released access to capital funds for the remainder of fiscal year 09 for these three projects, and Saint Joseph Health System will learn further details about access to capital for 2010 in the coming months. While Saint Joseph is optimistic that these projects will continue into 2010, it recognizes that the volatile economic climate will require flexibility in the timeliness and schedules of each project. More details will be forthcoming.

A Look Back

Saint Joseph - Jessamine's Grand Opening Celebration

A nighttime view of Saint Joseph - Jessamine in Nicholasville.

Several hundred people took a sneak peek at the new facility during an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony in late December.

Community members commented on their newfound peace of mind with having an ambulatory care center so close to home.

Staff members provided guided tours through the 60,000-square-foot facility which features emergency services, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services and offices for physicians and staff. Above is pharmacist/tour guide Kimberly Hood.

Laboratory MTs at Saint Joseph - Jessamine, from left to right, Hermie Veneracion (supervisor), James Hensley, Ella Spears, Pamela Feger, Pamela Atwell, Tammy Jones and Kimberly Williams, showed visitors their new space during the open house.

Saint Joseph - Jessamine CT Techs Zoya Brutsky and Joey Lee demonstrated the CT scan technology with Josh Fightmaster, an employee at Saint Joseph Hospital who will help at the new facility on occasion.

Visitors toured the emergency department at Saint Joseph - Jessamine and were impressed with its well-planned layout and effective design.

A visitor entered one of the 14 patient bays in the emergency department.

Dr. Barry Parsley, left, and Dr. Jack Geren, both of Keightley & Parsley, spoke with members of the community at the open house. Their emergency medicine group is providing coverage for Saint Joseph - Jessamine in addition to Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph - Berea.

Kathryn Hansen provided open house guests with information about the Saint Joseph Sleep Wellness Center during a health fair held in the facility's dedicated community space for health education and events.

Dorene Graves, Sherri Napier and Roslyn Graves attended the open house, specifically to check out the radiology department. Both Dorene and Roslyn work in radiology at Saint Joseph Hospital and Sherri is the clinical supervisor of the Saint Joseph Radiography Program. Several of her graduates now work at Saint Joseph - Jessamine.

BJ Preston, a CT Tech at Saint Joseph - Jessamine, brought two of her children to the open house celebration, which was held just before Christmas.

Marilyn Swinford, right, director of emergency services for SJJ/SJH/SJE, visited with her best friend Mary Beth Peddicord, her husband Tony and their son Michael at the open house.

President Ken Haynes chatted with local community members during the open house.

The Saint Joseph - Jessamine facility was built with the environment in mind. Among its many green aspects is its lighting features. The indirect lighting in the two entrance lobby areas utilizes fluorescent lighting that is energy efficient and coupled with the clear story glass windows allows for natural day lighting to fill the area.

Bill Pabian, center, director of plant operations, chatted with a Lexington architect who was curious about construction details of Saint Joseph - Jessamine. Behind them is a piece of stained glass from the chapel that was at Russell Hall at Nazareth. The building was recently demolished and Saint Joseph received several of the window panes for use in new construction.

Nicholasville artist Eddie Clements created a wood sculpture of a cross, titled "Blocks of Life," from maple and cherry for one of the lobby areas of Saint Joseph - Jessamine.

Guests enjoyed refreshments and Christmas treats at the open house.

Country music star and Nicholasville native Eddie Montgomery, of Montgomery Gentry, attended the grand opening celebration of Saint Joseph - Jessamine. He's pictured above with Saint Joseph benefactor RJ Corman, right.

Chris Bowe, administrator of Saint Joseph - Jessamine, visited with his mother-in-law at the grand opening of the new ambulatory care center.

Dan Andrews, center, unit manager of the emergency department at Saint Joseph - Jessamine, met Chris Bowe's wife and other members of his family during the grand opening celebration.

Miniature emergency kits were given out during the public open house.
