Exceptional Education

Saint Joseph Diabetes and Nutrition Center is now accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) for its high-quality, comprehensive approach to diabetes education and care. This new accreditation recognizes quality services at all five locations and allows the program to easily expand to additional sites.

Karen McKnight (left), director of Saint Joseph Diabetes and Nutrition Center, with her staff members.

To achieve AADE accreditation, the Center had to meet strict national standards, submit continuous quality improvement information and undergo an in-depth site interview to demonstrate its structured education program that teaches patients techniques and tools in the healthy self-management of diabetes. Patients enrolled in Saint Joseph Diabetes and Nutrition Center’s Diabetes Self-Management Program receive individualized care from certified diabetes educators and attend classes that cover a wide array of topics including healthy eating, taking medications, monitoring, being active, coping, problem-solving and avoiding complications.

AADE is one of three CMS-approved accrediting organizations, ensuring the provision of quality educational services to Medicare patients.

Saint Joseph Diabetes and Nutrition Center offers diabetes education, care improvements and oversight at Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East, Saint Joseph - Berea, Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling and Saint Joseph - Jessamine. SaintJosephHealthSystem.org/diabetes

Introducing CHI Healthy Spirit

CHI Healthy Spirit is the system-wide effort to extend our “building healthy communities” mission to the workplace. New tools, education, employee communication, benefit changes and programs will help us create a healthy workplace— physically, financially, mentally and spiritually. The broad effort will help us and our families enjoy good health and have enough income for retirement.

CHI Healthy Spirit also gives us a more prominent, active role in health care decisions and responsibilities. We will share more in the cost— and we’ll have a better understanding about how our choices and behaviors impact health care costs, our physical health and our financial well-being. This is a long-term commitment to one another and our ministry. Elements of CHI Healthy Spirit will be rolled out over the next three years of more, taking into consideration other major initiatives, economic conditions and fiscal responsibility.

To learn more, visit the Inside CHI Web site (Inside CHI: About CHI/CHI Healthy Spirit).

Watch the Video! Who’s Looking After Us?

Watch the first of the quarterly videos (located on Inside CHI: About CHI/CHI Healthy Spirit/HealthTube Videos) that support the CHI Healthy Spirit initiative. Titled "Who's Looking After Us?," the three-minute video introduces CHI Healthy Spirit and focuses on what employees can do to live healthier lives. The next video, scheduled for late September, will focus on choices to make during annual enrollment.

Do You Have a Story to Tell?

Catholic Health Initiatives is collecting stories for yet another edition of its hallmark publication titled Sacred Stories, to be published in early 2010. In order to capture the living spirituality of the people of Catholic Health Initiatives, CHI has created a national archive of sacred stories. These stories illustrate how those associated with CHI help carry out its mission to nurture the healing ministry of Christ, while building a culture grounded in spirituality. These collections of stories are often seen in office areas and waiting rooms and are frequently used for reflections
at meetings.

If you have experienced a special moment with a co-worker, patient or patient's family, please consider sharing your story. Preference is given to stories that address the spirituality at work in the routines of our ordinary, daily ministry, not just in extraordinary circumstances or extraordinary work performance. You can view examples of past sacred stories on the Inside CHI Web site.

Your story should be no more than 450 words. The submission deadline is September 22.
Type your story and send it to Dorothy Zimmerman via e-mail.

Flu Season Prevention and Preparation

Flu season is expected to start within the next several weeks, and we are all acutely aware of the heightened concern around this particular year, considering the potential impact of the H1N1 (swine) flu strain. Saint Joseph Health System is working closely with state officials, other local health care providers, and Catholic Health Initiatives to prepare.

• By the end of September, Saint Joseph Health System will be offering seasonal (regular) flu vaccines to all employees at no cost. We strongly recommend that all SJHS employees are vaccinated, even if you do not work in a clinical area, and even if you have not been vaccinated in previous flu seasons. If you choose not to accept the seasonal flu vaccination, you will be required to sign a letter of declination which states that you understand the risk of not doing so.

• Watch for further information soon regarding dates and locations
of the vaccinations across Saint Joseph Health System.

• Information will be released in the next few weeks with details of the H1N1 vaccine availability and requirements for us as health care professionals.

• Several plans are underway to ensure that we have appropriate staffing to continue delivering care in the event that our employees become ill with either flu strain;
those details will be shared soon.

• Remember to wash your hands often and thoroughly!

A Compliment for the Environmental Services Team

“Yesterday a patient’s family member stopped me in the hallway, asking for directions. During our brief conversation she was highly complimentary of the cleanliness of the hospital—especially the floors. After complimenting, she shared that she works as a high school custodian in another school district and acknowledged how difficult it is to keep up floors with all the traffic they receive.”

Great job Environmental Services TEAM! Your hard work is appreciated by us all!
