Flaget Chosen as ‘Best Medical Facility in Nelson County’

Flaget Memorial Hospital is once again grateful to be chosen in 2009 as the Best Medical Facility in Nelson County. Every year, The Kentucky Standard holds a “Best of Nelson County” contest, asking its readers to vote for the best of the best. Categories range from local restaurants to business and services. This is the second consecutive year and the third time overall Flaget has won in the best medical facility category. 2009 is also the year that Flaget has been chosen as one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky. Congratulations to the employees of Flaget!

Dependent Eligibility Audit Deadline is NEXT TUESDAY, SEPT. 8!

For Saint Joseph Health System employees who have received a Dependent Audit Notice that requires verification of eligibility of covered dependent(s), the deadline is next Tuesday, September 8, 2009. Unless you have received confirmation that your processing is complete, please remember to fax the required documentation listed on the Dependent Audit Notice with the accompanying Dependent Audit Form.

For more detailed information about the Dependent Audit and action required on your part, please log in to HR/Payroll Connection from Inside CHI at http://home.catholichealth.net, click on the "Provide Verification for Covered Dependents" link which will lead you to the "Your Dependent Solution" page. Click the line that says "Verify the Eligibility of Your Dependent(s)" and follow the instructions given.

Preparing for Flu Season

Saint Joseph Health System and Catholic Health Initiatives are currently working together to plan for challenges that this year’s flu season may present, especially given the expected increased incidence of the H1N1 strain. Once finalized, the plan will include recommended vaccines for all Saint Joseph Health System employees. Watch for more information. (Click on image for steps to protect against the flu.)

Labor Day

Non-clinical offices are closed across Saint Joseph Health System Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day.

Represent Saint Joseph - Berea at the Farmer's Market this Fall

Employees are needed to represent Saint Joseph - Berea at the local Farmer’s Market, held across the street from the hospital (behind the Promenade Gallery) every Tuesday and Friday afternoon, 4:30-7:00 p.m., through October. So far, nurses have held blood pressure checks, dietitians have distributed healthy eating information and a suggestion was made for chaplaincy to distribute information regarding Advance Directives.

What can you bring to the table? This is an excellent outreach opportunity! All departments are invited to participate. Talk it over with your manager and have him/her schedule you some time at the market! Nurses Needed to Work Health Screenings

Saint Joseph Health System nurses interested in earning extra money are needed to work at upcoming corporate health screenings at Continental Crushing in Millersburg.

Crowe Fest '09 THIS WEEKEND

Saint Joseph - Jessamine RJ Corman Ambulatory Care Center is sponsoring the annual J.D. Crowe Bluegrass Music Festival at Ichthus Farm in Wilmore this weekend, September 4 & 5. The festival features numerous bluegrass artists, including legendary banjoist J.D. Crowe, and festivities for the whole family. Visit www.CroweFest.com to view the schedule of events. Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Center
Open House in London

Saint Joseph - London's newest service line, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Center (located at the London Shopping Center, behind Express Medical Imaging and Dr. Khan’s office), is planning a Ribbon Cutting and Open House on Friday, September 11 from 2:00-3:30 p.m.

Taste of London

Saint Joseph - London’s Chef Terry Crist and the Food & Nutrition staff will be set-up as vendors at the Taste of London, a food festival that will take place Saturday, September 12 at the London-Laurel County Farmers' Market in downtown London. This event showcases locally owned restaurants and caterers. Tickets are purchased, then redeemed for "tastes" from different vendors, with proceeds going to local charities. Blessing Ceremony for Saint Joseph - Jessamine

Lexington Bishop Ronald Gainer will lead a blessing ceremony for Saint Joseph - Jessamine RJ Corman Ambulatory Care Center (SJJ) Wednesday, September 16 at 10:00 a.m.

During this time, the Dave Lafferty Serenity Garden will be unveiled. Lafferty, who will be present for the ceremony, worked for the Saint Joseph family for 45 years, serving as the executive director of facilities. He retired January 2, 2009, the day SJJ opened its doors to the Nicholasville community. SJJ was Lafferty’s final project for Saint Joseph Health System.

Heart Institute Open House at Saint Joseph East

Saint Joseph Heart Institute at Saint Joseph East has opened at its new location on the first floor of the hospital. The new space is larger and features three Siemens Cath Labs and a 12-bed HISSU for prep and recovery (this is an increase from two cath labs and a 6-bed HISSU located on the ground floor). Attend the open house on Wednesday, September 16, 5-7 p.m., in the new first floor location.

Sign Up for the Spoonbread Festival 5K

Saint Joseph - Berea is the presenting sponsor of the Spoonbread Festival 5K Run and 1-Mile Fun Walk once again this year. The race is Saturday, September 19 and begins and ends at the hospital. The Spoonbread Festival is an annual fall festival that offers arts & crafts, games, contests, food and family fun. The hospital’s sponsorship is another example of how it is involved in its community and promotes living a healthy lifestyle.

Cycling Team Prepares for Bike Trek

The Saint Joseph Health System Cycling team is preparing for the Shakertown Bike Trek, September 19-21. This premier cycling event raises funds for the American Lung Association. The team has been participating in practice rides and holding fundraisers to get ready.

20th Annual World Chicken Festival

Saint Joseph - London is a sponsor of the 20th Annual World Chicken Festival to be held September 24-27 in downtown London. The festival features entertainment, vendors, arts & crafts, carnival rides, contests (including a Colonel Sanders look-alike contest and an egg drop), plenty of food and the world’s largest skillet. Join the Saint Joseph Race for the Cure Team

Saint Joseph Breast Center, a department of Saint Joseph Health System, is a proud sponsor of the Susan G. Komen 2009 Race for the Cure. Help in the fight against breast cancer and participate in the race on Saturday, September 26 in downtown Lexington.

The race is open to men and women runners and walkers of all ages and ability levels, and there are several events for breast cancer survivors. Lab Ride 2009

The Saint Joseph Hospital laboratory department is proud to host its first motorcycle ride! Join them on a scenic ride through Fayette, Jessamine, Madison and Clark counties, and get to know some of the people that work in the hospital laboratories in central Kentucky. Enjoy a ferry ride over the Kentucky River and gorgeous views of the Kentucky countryside.

All bikes are welcome! Duration of the ride will be approximately 1-1½ hours. The ride will start and end at the entrance of Jacobson Park (Richmond Rd., Lexington) on Sunday, September 27. A Walk to Remember

The annual “A Walk to Remember” will be held Sunday, October 4, 2 p.m., at Easy Walker Park in Mount Sterling for those who have experienced a loss of a child. The event allows parents, grandparents, family and friends to come together for a day of remembrance and sharing.

The program is coordinated by Jan Cornett, RN, nurse manager of the women’s care unit at Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, which sponsors the event. A symbolic balloon release is held during the event to help families let go of a small amount of their grief. Runners Needed for The Bourbon Chase

Saint Joseph Health System is sponsoring a team for The Bourbon Chase, October 9-10, and needs 12 motivated and fun runners to participate! During the event, teams of relay runners will cover 200 miles of scenic byways along the famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail and Bluegrass horse country.

Weight Watchers At Work in Martin—New Series Starting

A new Weight Watchers series will begin Tuesday, September 8 at Saint Joseph - Martin in the Community Education building. Cost is $144 and can be made in three payments of $48 on September 8 and the payments will be deposited on September 8, October 8 and November 8. Weight Watchers At Work in Berea—More Details Announced

A representative of Weight Watchers will be available in the Saint Joseph - Berea boardroom at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10 to answer employee and volunteer questions about the program and to sign people up. The first Saint Joseph - Berea Weight Watchers At Work session begins September 17; meetings will be on Thursday mornings at 8:00 a.m. in the Boardroom. There is a confidential weigh-in each week and a great meeting led by Saint Joseph - Berea's very own Vicki Hamilton of the ER. The meetings will provide valuable tools to eat healthy, move more and stay motivated.

For the 17-week series, a special price of $175 is being offered (it's normally $186 - that's like receiving a free week!). You also receive 19 weeks of free etools! A minimum of 20 fully paid members is needed for this offer. You can pay in three installments: the first payment will be due at the informational meeting September 10. Heart of Saint Joseph Award

Congratulations to Pam Gaunce for being named a recipient of the Heart of Saint Joseph Award at Saint Joseph East. Pam is a unit secretary for same day surgery.

Through the Heart of Saint Joseph Award, employees are recognized for outstanding performance in exemplifying Saint Joseph Health System's four core values: Reverence, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence. Any employee can nominate another employee for this possible recognition. The selected employee will receive the Heart of Saint Joseph Award certificate, $75.00, a preferred parking spot for one month and recognition in InCommon. The award is currently in place at Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East and Saint Joseph - Berea.

A Look Back

Employee Climate Assessment Celebration in London

Saint Joseph - London employees were treated to a free Kentucky Barbecue August 27 for achieving 100% participation on the recent Employee Climate Assessment and for receiving the overall highest score on the survey. The hospital recently received the "Employee Climate Assessment Excellence Award" for employees' outstanding efforts!

Celebrating Dr. Secor's 25 Years at Saint Joseph - Berea

Laura Secor, OR nurse, congratulated her husband, Mark Secor, orthopedic surgeon, as he received a gift from the Saint Joseph - Berea OR staff. The OR crew and Dr. Patrick Kelleher arranged a celebration of Dr. Secor’s 25th anniversary at Saint Joseph - Berea. The box of rocks symbolizes Dr. Secor’s passion for moving earth and rocks with his bulldozer (a hobby of his). Among gifts he received were a Kentucky hand-crafted wooden bulldozer and a cake decorated with a tiny bulldozer and a pile of dirt.
