High-Quality Respiratory Care in Berea

Saint Joseph - Berea has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition under a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals.

(Left to Right) Scott Thompson, Devonda Flannery, Cherry Ruffing, Anne Henderson and Crystal Noble are part of the Saint Joseph - Berea cardiopulmonary team that received Quality Respiratory Care program recognition in 2009. Members of the team not pictured are: Melissa Richardson, Tracey Cain, Janis Carpenter, Regina Goforth, Scott Hager, Brenda Hamilton, Stacey Irvin, Charles King, Jim Skeen, Brenda Smith, Fred Smith and Shannon Strauss.

Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling Master Facility Plan Update

New details were released about the replacement facility for Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling. After months of planning and design discussions, the formal design development phase has officially begun. This phase will take approximately two to three months, in preparation for a groundbreaking ceremony, tentatively planned for October. After the groundbreaking, construction will begin in the fall on the new all-private room hospital.

The facility will have a total of 40 private inpatient rooms, along with an intensive care unit, operating rooms, and maternity unit. The emergency department will have 14 private treatment rooms. These details are just a few of the exciting plans for the upcoming hospital; more will be shared as the project moves forward. The grand opening is anticipated to be in the summer of 2011.

Dependent Eligibility Audit
Documents needed to verify coverage

Saint Joseph Health System is joining other Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) facilities in a dependent eligibility audit this summer. During this audit all employees will need to document their relationship with their dependents so benefits coverage may continue.

Many employees keep their dependent coverage accurate and current. However, the audit is a good time to think about changes that may have affected your dependents’ eligibility. Examples include changes in marital status and college student status.

CHI’s medical, dental and vision plans are included in this audit. The audit will begin
July 29 and will end August 25, 2009.

Why are we doing this audit?
All of us need to help CHI meet its responsibility to be a good steward of its resources. The audit complements our system-wide efforts to use benefits wisely, fairly and efficiently.

CHI is not alone in conducting dependent eligibility audits. A recent national survey indicates that 61 percent of employers are planning to conduct an eligibility audit in 2009.

How the audit works

  • All employees with dependents must submit documentation
    to verify dependent eligibility
  • Copies of documents must be submitted July 29 – August 25;
information may be sent by mail or fax
  • Employee information will be kept confidential
  • A special call center and web site will be available to answer questions
  • If verification is not provided, dependents’ medical, dental and vision coverage
will end September 30; COBRA will not be available. Dependent life insurance
    coverage will end September 1.

Eligible dependents are:

  • Spouse
  • Unmarried children up to age 19
  • Full-time students who attend accredited schools up to age 25
  • Unmarried children of any age who are physically or mentally handicapped and are financially dependent on an employee may be eligible

Refer to the Catholic Health Initiatives Medical Plan Summary Plan Description for specifics related to eligible dependents. The Summary Plan Description is available in the forms section of the My Handbook tab (HR/Payroll Connection).

Documentation must prove relationship
More information will be mailed to your mailing address. You will receive the Dependent Audit Form and a list of documents you can use to verify your relationship with your dependents.

  • For your spouse, documentation examples include
joint federal tax return forms or marriage certificate.
  • For your children, documentation could include
birth certificates or tuition bills for students ages 19 to 25.

For more information
Before July 29, please direct questions to your local Human Resources Department. After July 29, you can: log on to HR/Payroll Connection and click the dependent audit link in your Activity Center (Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling employees can go to http://resources.hewitt.com/chi_yds) or call HR/Payroll Connection Support Center at 1.888.450.9450.

Employee Health Screenings Postponed for Larger Wellness Initiative

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Introduced at Saint Joseph East

On July 13, Saint Joseph East introduced a new Pulmonary Rehabilitation program designed to treat patients with many types of pulmonary illness (emphysema, asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, black lung, lung transplant or resection, just to name a few). This program will teach patients ways to live and breath better despite having a chronic lung disease. A multidisciplinary team consisting of a medical director, physical therapist, occupational therapist and respiratory therapist will direct a patient’s care as they go through the program.

The team will focus on exercise conditioning, endurance training, education and emotional support tailored to the patient’s specific needs. Patients who undergo pulmonary rehabilitation find they are able to do more for themselves, thus renewing their self-confidence. Patients are able to breathe better, increase their strength, decrease their anxiety and/or depression, prevent hospitalizations and reduce medication costs. The ultimate goal of this program is to improve the patient’s quality of life. For more information on Pulmonary Rehabilitation, please call 859.967.5737.

Saint Joseph - Berea appreciates the flavorful and nutritious value of homegrown produce. Feedback

Letter to Saint Joseph - London

“I wanted to make sure the right people were informed of the quality of staff you have at Saint Joseph - London. I'm sure all Saint Joseph Health System hospitals are equally wonderful, but our experience has been limited to the London facility.

My husband had a near fatal heart attack in May and another in June of this year. In both cases, he was surrounded by skilled doctors and nurses who saved his life (with God's help of course). These individuals honestly cared for my husband (and me) and I couldn't be more grateful for everything they did and said during our medical crisis. I want to list names, but I know I would forget a name and that would trouble me beyond words. As a compromise, let me praise them by department.

  • The Heart Team
  • The Hospitalists
  • Infectious Disease Specialist (Dr. Naval)
  • Medical Specialist of Kentucky (Drs. Patil, Vilca, Talib, Mandviwala, Abe, etc.)
  • CTU
  • ICU
  • Telemetry Floor
  • Physical Therapy
  • Patient Services
  • "Uncle Bob" - Volunteer Services

Hopefully, I have covered the bases. I am so thankful that our area of Kentucky has such a wonderful heart hospital to depend upon. God bless all who are involved.”

Letter to Saint Joseph - Martin

This was written to the OR staff by a patient who had an outpatient procedure.

"Thank you so much for all of the kindness and care that you gave me while I was at your hospital. I am so thankful and grateful to have had such a wonderful group of professional people to take care of me. I have had no problems with my surgery. I am doing great."

Comments from Carrie Barnett's Nomination Form

CARRIE BARNETT, RN
6th Floor Oncology, Saint Joseph Hospital

"Carrie Barnett is an extraordinary oncology nurse who has worked at Saint Joseph Hospital for eight years. She is incredibly compassionate about her cancer patients. She goes the extra mile in teaching them about cancer symptom management in terms that they can understand, in giving them brochures, letting them know about the resources that are available for them in the community, etc. She has made many referrals to the American Cancer Society for free wigs and scarves."

"Carrie has done one-on-one teaching at her church on her time with mastectomy patients that have asked for her help. She always makes sure her cancer patients are not in pain and she is an assertive advocate for patients always making sure their needs are met and will go the extra mile in contacting the resources such as our social worker, palliative care team, and the chaplains after assessing the psychosocial needs of the patient. Carrie is a very competent charge nurse, is on the clinical ladder and is in the process of preparing for her national Oncology Certification Exam this fall."

"Carrie will take the time to just LISTEN to the many, many concerns the patients and families have as they go through their cancer treatment and end of life care. She has helped many patients discuss their last dying wishes and concerns with dignity and respect. Our patients that return to 6 Oncology for continuing cancer treatment are always happy to see Carrie again and feel secure in her care."
