Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling Receives
‘Successful Practice Program’ Award

Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling (SJMS) was selected to receive a Kentucky Hospital Quality Program “Successful Practice Program Award” for the abstract titled Outcome-driven Innovative Approach to Total Joint Care for a Diverse Population. The need was identified for a patient-centered, multidisciplinary team approach for total joint replacement care due to the diverse population served by the hospital. Opportunities were identified to decrease process variation, complications, post-operative infections, and improve patient, staff and physician education.

(From left) Sheila Barnes, OR manager; Donna Rhodes, quality manager; Shelly Sanders, same day surgery manager; and Saint Joseph Health System CEO Gene Woods celebrated Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling's "Successful Practice Program Award."

SJMS established bold aims to: eliminate day of surgery cancellations, eliminate post-operative complications/infections and achieve 100% core measure scores by developing and implementing a comprehensive joint center.

The multidisciplinary team consists of a joint nurse coordinator, preoperative nurse, physicians, physical therapist, case manager, infection preventionist and the primary care nurse. Success of the program has resulted in day of surgery cancellations reduced by 83%. The surgical site infection rate decreased from 1.9% to 0.6%. Core measure scores are as follows: antibiotic administration 80% to 100%; antibiotic selection 91% to 100%; beta blocker administration 40% to 100%; and DVT prophylaxis from 75% to 96%.

This program is successful due to support from executive leadership, physician champion Dr. Jim Rollins and the multidisciplinary team.

'Share the Care' Program in Berea

"Share the Care" is a new project implemented by the Saint Joseph - Berea Employee Council to acknowledge outstanding caring. When you observe a co-worker in an example of caring, such as going the extra mile to make someone have a better day or doing something nice for no reason, pass a "Share the Care" pin to them. The idea is for employees to pass the pin to fellow employees to share the care. The goal is not to keep the pin to yourself but to look for opportunities to pass it on! Pins have been distributed to all departments. Start sharing!

New Beeper Process for Respiratory Care Department

The respiratory care department at Saint Joseph Hospital has a new beeper process, having switched from voice beepers to digital beepers. When needing respiratory care services: Dial 712 + the beeper number for your area. When you page the new digital beeper you will hear, “at the tone please key in your number.” At this point, enter the extension number you want the therapist to call you back at. DO NOT enter any message codes with the call back extension number. Due to wrong entry of these codes, the codes will no longer be utilized until further notice.

Example: If you need a respiratory therapist for a patient in room 325, you would dial 712 + 797 (beeper number) then at the tone you would enter your phone extension for the therapist to call you back.

Letter to Saint Joseph - Berea

A Patient's Wife Expresses her Thanks:

Dear Mr. Gerard (Greg Gerard, President of Saint Joseph - Berea),

I brought my husband to the emergency room at Saint Joseph - Berea on a
Friday evening with symptoms of a possible stroke (numbness on the left side of his face, slight drawing of his bottom lip). Within 30 minutes he had been assessed, had an EKG, chest X-ray, CT scan, blood drawn and an IV started. I was amazed by the extreme efficiency and the respectful, personal and poised manner in which he was treated by all staff members!

Dr. Mukherjee was extremely attentive, his follow-through very professionally executed, coupled with sincerity and an obvious desire to achieve a positive outcome. (Fortunately my husband’s symptoms did not progress!)

We’ve only lived in Berea about 2 1/2 years. Other than two mammograms and a bone density test for myself we have had no other contact with the hospital until this ER episode. It’s been a pleasure to have had Kate Griffey perform my mammograms on both occasions. She exemplifies treating a patient as a person, not a procedure, and is an employee of which you can be very proud.

Having worked professionally in a variety of medical settings over the years, I must say that our experience thus far with Saint Joseph - Berea has been outstanding in every respect. Thank you for experiences which have instilled trust and confidence in this facility and personnel.

Accolades

Daisy Award Winner

Congratulations to Michele Phelps, R.N., a critical care float, for being named a recipient of the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Saint Joseph East.

The award is part of the Daisy Foundation’s national program to recognize the super-human efforts of nurses, and is in place throughout Saint Joseph Health System. Honorees receive a certificate of commendation, a Daisy Award pin, and a sculpture hand-carved by the Shona Tribe in Africa titled “A Healer’s Touch.” In addition, the nurse’s unit is treated to cinnamon buns.

To learn more or to nominate someone, visit SaintJosephNurses.org, or look for Daisy Award nomination boxes throughout your hospital. inCommon will frequently highlight Saint Joseph Health System's Daisy Award winners.

Comments from Michele Phelps' Nomination Form

MICHELE PHELPS, RN
Critical Care Float, Saint Joseph East

"This extraordinary nurse helped save my husband's life, but also gave care to me! She was honest, warm-hearted and sensitive to both of us. She helped me get strength to attend ALANON. She may have saved my marriage by recommending this on top of saving his life!"

"She took the time to sit with us and explain what was going on with my husband and what we could expect during our ICU and hospital stay. She went far beyond the basics with us and answered any and all questions that we had."

"She discussed his alcoholism and broke it down into basic terms for us."

Michele spent private time with the patient’s wife to discuss how the patient’s illness was affecting her and how she could take care of herself and assure that she was a good source of support for her husband. She talked to them about options for them to consider after discharge from the hospital such as counseling or ALANON.

During the patient’s time in ICU, his wife brought in smiley face balloons with a nurses cap on them and wrote Michele’s name on one balloon, thanking her for all of her help!

PACS Upgrade

The PACS system upgrade was a complex project with far reaching impact. With great talent, expertise and precision, Tracey Eades and Lisa Davis were key contributors to a successful go-live. They were focused and dedicated to getting the job done right for more than three months. Together as a team, they made sure testing was thorough and the radiologists were informed. Congratulations to Tracey and Lisa on a job well done!

A Look Back

Faces of Cancer Exhibit

The "Faces of Cancer" traveling photo exhibit was displayed in the lobby at Flaget Memorial Hospital from June 28-July 10; it will now be displayed in another county in the region. The exhibit is a project that was part of the June 28 Cancer Survivor Sunday celebration held in Bardstown. Sponsors of the event included Flaget Memorial Hospital, the Kentucky Cancer Program and the National Patient Advocate Foundation. Amy Taylor of Flaget, Suzanne Gude of the Kentucky Cancer Program and Luke Barlowe of the National Patient Advocate Foundation located a photographer, Patti Longmire, who was willing to create the exhibit for free, donating all photography, printing and mounting services. The faces are of cancer survivors.

20th Annual Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament

The Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation presented its 20th Golf Tournament June 15 at the University Club of Kentucky. Netting nearly $75,000 for the Appalachian Outreach Program, the Saint Joseph Free Health Clinic and the Patient and Family Assistance Fund, the tournament was a huge success. Nearly 300 golfers and 40 volunteers joined forces for a fun day of golf and the opportunity to help Saint Joseph build a healthier community.

Over the past 20 years, the event has netted nearly $1 Million to support the mission and programs of Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East. The Appalachian Outreach Program, established in 1986 by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, provides follow-up and support services after a hospital visit to patients in more than 30 counties in central and eastern Kentucky. The Saint Joseph Free Health Clinic, established in 1997, provides primary health care services to the uninsured and poor residents of Fayette County. The Patient and Family Assistance Fund assists patients and their families with various needs during an extended hospital stay.

The presenting sponsor of this year’s event was Bluegrass Oxygen. In addition to lunch before the tournament and an evening dinner provided by Spindletop Hall, participants had the opportunity to win many door prizes and purchase tickets for the “Golf Ball Drop.” This year’s lucky winner was Dr. Scott Fleming, a physician at Saint Joseph Hospital.

Nearly 300 golfers played in the 20th Annual Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament; here, they prepared to take the course.

HIM Celebrates Successful Year

Members of Saint Joseph Berea’s HIM (health information management) department celebrated their recent accomplishments at a luncheon at Boone Tavern in June. Over the course of the last year the HIM department was able to reap the rewards of being part of a health care system. In less than one year the HIM team accomplished goals that appeared impossible. They reduced a staggering DNFB to a fraction of what it was the previous year. Plus, employees' energy and activity circulating in the scan center helped the backlog vanish. The department also received other recognitions throughout the year as tokens of appreciation for going above and beyond.
