SJMS Prepares to Move Hospital One Patient at a Time

After more than a year of training, planning and preparation, the staff of Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling (SJMS) is preparing for the patient transfer to the brand new hospital. At 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 16, staff members will begin moving patients one-by-one from the existing downtown hospital to the new replacement facility located off I-64 at Exit 110. Both hospitals will remain operational during the entire move to provide seamless and uninterrupted patient care.

Patients will be transferred by ambulance (at no cost to them). The process is timed so that patients will leave the emergency department at the existing facility every three minutes and the entire patient transfer should be completed within just a few hours. The emergency department will be the last area to transfer; remaining patients will be treated on-site and admitted patients will be transferred to the new facility.

The new hospital is already stocked with necessary supplies and equipment. Items that could be moved ahead of time are in place along with new technology across the hospital. Non-patient care and administrative offices began moving this week.

With support from Montgomery County Ambulance, patients will travel down Winn Street, The By-Pass and Maysville Road to reach the new hospital. Saint Joseph – Mount Sterling has worked with local and state police for assistance with navigating through traffic, as well as the local health department.

Plans for the existing facility on 50 Sterling Avenue are being discussed by Saint Joseph Health System’s executive team. To learn more about the new hospital, visit www.SaintJosephMountSterling.org.

On June 1 SJHS Board Chair Mike Fiechter, SJHS Interim CEO Bruce Klockars and SJMS Interim President Greg Gerard (left to right, holding scissors) led the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new SJMS facility.

Joplin Tornado and Pierre Flooding Relief

Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) is committed to helping ministry colleagues affected by the tornado devastation in Joplin, MO, and the flooding taking place in Pierre, SD. Nine CHI employees who live in the Joplin area are safe, although some of them experienced damage to their homes and property. Some employees and physicians who work at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Pierre have evacuated their homes as flood waters continue
to rise.

Here’s how you can help:
To provide direct support to CHI colleagues in Joplin, employees are encouraged to make contributions to the CHI Employee Financial Assistance Fund. Any excess donations will remain in the Fund to assist employees who need help in the future. Your contributions are tax-deductible. There are two ways to contribute:

• Send a check, payable to the CHI Employee Financial Assistance Fund, to:
   Pam Sutthoff

Merger Update: Cerner Chosen as Clinical Information System

The Oversight Committee unanimously agreed to proceed with Cerner Corp. as the provider of the clinical information technology platform and McKesson for the revenue cycle information technology platform for the new organization. Cerner’s product will serve as the organization-wide platform for all clinical applications, including electronic medical records.

Through an intensive, four-month process, the IT Work Thread Team assessed multiple options for an organization-wide clinical IT platform. When the leading options were thoroughly evaluated and compared on four main criteria – alignment with the new organization’s vision and objectives, suitability for care delivery, teaching and research, cost and time to implement – Cerner emerged as the top choice.

Clinician leaders from the three partners provided their input to the selection process and will be fully involved in the development process as well.

Watch for information soon regarding a potential merger between Saint Joseph Health System, Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare and University of Louisville Hospital. Please continue to read additional updates in Partnership Progress, the biweekly newsletter regarding the network. You may also find more information at http://news.sjhlex.org, or www.partnershipprogress.org.

Honors & Awards

Daisy Award Winners

Congratulations to recent recipients of the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses throughout Saint Joseph Health System. View their celebration photos and read comments from their nomination forms below.

Daisy Award Winners-Third Quarter, Fiscal Year 2011:
Carol Bentley, LPN, Med/Surg, Saint Joseph - Martin
Bethany Bolone, RN, ED, Saint Joseph - Jessamine
Wilma Partin, RN, Outpatient Surgery, Saint Joseph - London
Summer Price, RN, ED, Saint Joseph - Berea
Mary Ralph, RN, Wound Care, Saint Joseph Hospital
William Randolph, RN, Med/Surg, Saint Joseph East
Laurie Talbott, RN, Flaget Birth Center, Flaget Memorial Hospital
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carol Bentley
Carol Bentley, LPN, Med/Surg, Saint Joseph - Martin
"Carol is an excellent nurse. She always has compassion and goes above and beyond for her patients, family and co-workers. She is a great educator and patient advocate."
Bethany Bolone
Bethany Bolone, RN, ED, Saint Joseph - Jessamine
"Bethany is a remarkable ED nurse. I enjoy working with her on a daily basis. She is a great team player, who I know I can depend on. Bethany goes out of her way to demonstrate compassionate care to her patients and family members. An example of that would be when she had to care for a 3-month-old that was coding in the ED. Unfortunately the baby did not survive, so it was a difficult time for both the family and the ED staff. It is every parent’s worst nightmare and it really hit close to home for Bethany; however she remained calm and focused when she was with the parents. Bethany tried to comfort them in the best way she knew how, and made sure the family had everything they needed.
Sometimes it is the little things that make such a difference to others. Bethany is a wonderful example of a skilled, compassionate nurse who makes a difference in the lives of her patients and fellow co-workers everyday."
Wilma Partin
Wilma Partin, RN, Outpatient Surgery, Saint Joseph - London
"Today I listened from a distance as Wilma was assessing a patient. She always greets them with a kind and enthusiastic voice, but today she went a little further. When she asked the patient about the medications she takes at home, the patient's husband, very humbly and in a soft voice, answered her by saying he had been unable to afford to buy his wife's blood pressure medication and that he wouldn't get paid again until Friday. Wilma listened intently and finished her questions, but while she left the room she had tears in her eyes. A very short time later, I saw Wilma return to the patient's room and give the husband some money.
The gentleman didn't want to take the money, but Wilma told him God had blessed her in many ways and she wanted to pass some of that blessing on. (Unknowingly there would be more problems to come this patient's way in just a few moments.) Later in the day the patient, who is only 45-years-old, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Wilma is truly a servant to God and through his hands touches her patient's lives daily; but today she touched another life, mine. We are truly blessed at Saint Joseph - London to have Wilma on our staff."
Summer Price
Summer Price, RN, ED, Saint Joseph - Berea
"Summer was very kind and gentle with my 10-year-old daughter. A good bedside manner in hospitals and doctor’s offices have all but disappeared, but Summer was sweet and my daughter commented to me that she liked her.
She treated my daughter like a patient, not a number. We need more nurses like her in the medical system in this country. I appreciate her compassion tremendously and so does my daughter."
Mary Ralph
Mary Ralph, RN, Wound Care, Saint Joseph Hospital
"I had a four-month experience with a baseball-sized wound in my leg. I was very nervous and Mary always seemed to try to comfort me. She called me at home to check on me and was always available when needed.
She was always kind, considerate and passionate about my needs and the need of others! A truly wonderful nurse to have A++++!"
William Randolph
William Randolph, RN, Med/Surg, Saint Joseph East
"My mother underwent a total knee replacement, Will was our overnight nurse during the first night. I am not sure what we would have done without him. My Mom’s blood pressure was extremely low, low urine output, and she was confused.
All through the night William was constantly checking on us and was very proactive in her care. Due to his compassion and knowledge, both my mom and I knew we were in skilled hands. He was our guardian Angel that night!"
Laurie Talbott
Laurie Talbott, RN, Flaget Birth Center, Flaget Memorial Hospital
"Laurie is a true team leader, she is always there to lend a hand, offer advice, and stand up for what is right. Laurie is a wonderful teacher and mentor each day. She exemplifies compassion, integrity and excellence in everything she does. I am very happy to work on her team."
