Saint Joseph - Martin Flood Victims Aid

As part of Saint Joseph Health System, we are also part of an extended family across central and eastern Kentucky. During the week of May 4, one of our family members experienced tremendous distress and heartache as a result of the extreme weather in eastern Kentucky. Saint Joseph - Martin was caught in the middle of one of the worst floods on record in that part of the state. A large part of the community was completely under water, and many homes and businesses were destroyed. While the Saint Joseph - Martin facility did not experience significant damage, many employees did lose belongings at their homes. These items included critical needs such as hot water heaters, washer and dryer sets and other items that many of us take for granted.

To assist in the recovery and help our fellow employees resume their daily lives, Saint Joseph Health System has established a fund through the Saint Joseph Foundation that will be designated specifically for these employees. Please consider giving whatever amount you can to help during this time of need.

Your gift is tax deductible, and you may donate online at www.SaintJoseph
Foundation.org
by clicking on “Make a Donation” and checking the box for “Saint Joseph - Martin,” and then “Martin Flood Victims.” If you prefer, you may send a check made payable to the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, and write “for Saint Joseph - Martin” on the memo line. All checks should be sent to Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation, One Saint Joseph Drive, Lexington, KY, 40504. For further questions, please call 859.313.1705.

Employee Benefit News:
Preferred Drug Step Therapy Program to Begin in June

There are many positive events happening in the pharmaceutical industry. Never before has such a wide range of equally effective, lower cost generics and brand-name alternative drugs, been available. This is exciting news for Catholic Health Initiatives employees because it presents an opportunity for you to save money while using these lower-cost, effective medications in place of more costly medications.

When you chose a lower-cost medication, there is a benefit to both Catholic Health Initiatives and Saint Joseph Health System. That’s because our Medical Plan is self-funded, meaning all of our claims (for employees and families) are paid out of CHI and Saint Joseph bank accounts. When you save money by using lower-cost medications, so does the organization.

To take advantage of the lower-cost medications now available, CHI will be introducing Preferred Drug Step Therapy (PDST) programs for six drug classes beginning in June. These six drug classes include Cardiovascular, Depression, Gastroenterology, Migraine Headaches, Osteoporosis and Respiratory.

The PDST programs will help you understand your specific lower-cost options by sending a personalized letter to you or your family members who are taking targeted drugs. This notification gives you time to proactively change your prescription to a preferred generic or brand alternative, which results in savings for you. Watch for more information soon!

Feedback

To the Nurses in the Pain Management Center at Saint Joseph Hospital

To My Nurses:

Never lose your pretty smiles; they bring comfort to those of us in pain. Never cease to touch; your touch soothes our wounded bodies and reminds us we are human. I could never repay you for all you have done so I've written you this poem. The words are true and you truly are "Healing Angels."

If grains of sand were dollar bills
and each one I gave you could repay you
for all your compassion, kindness and exceptional attention,
then all the sand on all the beaches in all the world wouldn't be enough!

Same Day Surgery, Saint Joseph East

Daisy Award winner Sue Raney (center) was honored during a surprise celebration thrown by co-workers and members of the executive team at SJE. She is pictured with fellow same day surgery nurses Kim Adams, left, and Susan Centers, right.

Comments from Sue Raney's Nomination Form

"Sue has been employed at this facility (SJE) for 26 years. She is a very compassionate, caring, and skilled nurse. She has a special gift when it comes to working with patients that are mentally challenged. She has demonstrated her special skill on several occasions, but one particular incident stands out.

Mark was a 47-year-old Down syndrome patient scheduled for teeth extractions. Sue's brother had Down syndrome, so this patient was close to her heart. Mark's family had been very apprehensive about even trying to do the surgery. Mark was easily agitated and they didn't think he would even change his clothes, much less let Sue start an IV. Sue was able to comfort him and his family while preparing him for surgery. She used gentle words, great patience and was able to encourage Mark to allow her to do the necessary steps to get him ready for surgery. This is just one example of her remarkable kindness, patience and compassion she shows to her patients."

The Daisy Award is a national program that is currently in place at Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East, Saint Joseph - Jessamine, Saint Joseph - Berea and Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, and just recently at Saint Joseph - Martin, Saint Joseph - London and Flaget Memorial Hospital. To receive this honor, a recipient's nomination form must be filled with stories and examples of how the nurse has performed in extraordinary ways. Managers and employees from the operating room, cath lab, radiology, clinical education, respiratory/physical/occupational/speech therapy, emergency and observation talked with the students and reviewed the wide range of careers in health care. The tour ended with interview tips, educational commitment and salary ranges from human resources. Some of the students are looking forward to returning next year, to see the new hospital!
