New Daily Advertising Look on the front page of the Lexington Herald-Leader for a Saint Joseph Health System ad daily. Several rotating ads will appear in this spot to promote our latest advancements in medicine, upcoming events and recruitment efforts. This daily advertising will allow promotion of multiple services on an ongoing basis, and strengthen the Saint Joseph Health System brand across central Kentucky. Saint Joseph Health System's ads will be the only advertising on the front page, and marks the first time the paper has allowed any advertising in this premium front page location. At Flaget Memorial Hospital, you will notice some changes in the cafeteria in an effort to support the system's "Go Green" initiatives. New environmentally-friendly disposable containers are available; however, there will be a charge for each container if you choose this option. WellSpring is the name of a new gift shop at Saint Joseph - Berea that opened May 13. It will be distinguished by new choices of merchandise to encourage better health and wellness. The goal for the new gift shop is to serve as a resource center for patients, visitors, employees and volunteers. It will offer items and information to help customers manage challenges to their health and well-being as a step in creating the optimal healing environment. WellSpring features a fountain, plants and soothing music which create a relaxing atmosphere. Items will continually be added to the store's merchandise selection. WellSpring opened on the heels of the new Balance Wellness Center at Saint Joseph - Berea, which offers exercise equipment and weights as well as resources for good nutrition and lifestyle balance 24 hours a day. New Cafeteria Night Hours at Saint Joseph Hospital Beginning Monday, May 18, the cafeteria at Saint Joseph Hospital will extend its hours. It will now be open for third shift employees from 9:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. The grill will stay open until 8 p.m. These new operating hours will remain as long as the cafeteria is utilized during these extended hours. E-mails and/or faxes related to the capacity status will be sent to office managers of surgeons and hospitalists to alert them of the need to join the hospital's efforts in expediting discharges and rapid transfers when applicable. Blood Glucose Control Protocol and SQ Insulin Standing Orders Saint Joseph Health System is committed to achieving moderate blood glucose control of below 180mg/dL (not intense control). Based on research, use of basal insulin is recommended to help achieve target goals. However, use of sliding scale insulin (correction insulin) as solo therapy is not recommended.
In working with Dr. Villaran, KIMA, and the Lexington Clinic Hospitalists, the Blood Glucose Control protocol at Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East has been changed to reflect the recommendations of basal/bolus insulin use. As

Volunteers Needed for Diabetes Walk Volunteers are needed to be on the medical support team for the "Step Out to Fight Diabetes" walk at Keeneland on Saturday, May 30. The primary duty includes monitoring walkers for signs of distress or assistance needed. Volunteers are stationed at points along the route. There will be EMS and ham radio operator support. Students can receive up to $5,000 for one year. Recipients may reapply and compete for funding for successive years. Recipients are expected to participate in some health ministry activity or project during the scholarship period. Each recipient will be invited to attend a foundation board meeting to share his/her ministry experience. The goal of the scholarship program is to encourage nursing students to explore, learn more about, and develop an interest in pursuing volunteer and career opportunities in the area of Health Ministry and Parish Nursing. Opens in Berea

Joseph - Berea physical therapist Lori Howard has just received
her certification in ASTYM treatment. It's a rehab process that effectively
treats chronic tendon disorders, scar tissue and fibrosis. The goal
of ASTYM treatment is to stimulate the body's healing response, resulting
in the resorption and remodeling of scar tissue and the regeneration
of degenerative tendons. Diagnoses which respond well include: tennis
elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff tendonitis and bursitis,
plantar fasciitis, back pain, and many more musculoskeletal problems.
Saint Joseph - Berea's Rehab is now accepting patients with valid prescriptions.
The
capacity alert Guidelines for Bed Capacity was created at Saint
Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East with
the intent to help implement steps to address and expedite patient flow
when bed capacity is limited.
Numerous
opportunities for teens in patient-care and non-patient care placements
are available at Saint Joseph Hospital, Saint Joseph East and
Saint Joseph - Jessamine. Volunteering is a great opportunity
for your teens to obtain career experience or fulfill community service
hour requirements for classes and clubs. Volunteer experience looks
great on college or scholarship applications, and teens also receive
the personal satisfaction of helping others. 
The
Margaret T. Stoeckinger Foundation Health Ministry/Parish Nursing Scholarship
Program provides supplemental funding for tuition, books and fees for
students with a documented history of service to their parish, congregation,
church, synagogue, or mosque in order to enable them to attend accredited
baccalaureate or graduate nursing programs. |

Health Fair in Jessamine The Saint Joseph - Jessamine RJ Corman Ambulatory Care Center (SJJ) is partnering with Jessamine Christian Church to host a free community health fair on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will offer health screenings, educational resources and medical professionals speaking on various healthy living topics. In between awareness opportunities, parents can let their children bounce on the “moonwalk” and play a round of putt-putt. All events will take place on the SJJ campus in Nicholasville. Relay For Life Activities in London
The Relay For Life event will be held at the Optimist Center on Friday, June 19. Please join us in our fight for a cure. If anyone is interested in participating on the Saint Joseph - London Team, please contact Candice Fox at 606.877.6133.
To date, Saint Joseph - Martin has raised $2,731.60 for Relay for Life; this total is 23% of the team's goal of $12,000. Relay for Life will be held Friday, June 12 at Archer Park. So far, 20 walkers are registered. If everyone raises their $100.00 that will be $2,000 bucks! Please contact Mary Martin or Robin Bartrum if you want to join the Relay for Life team. The dedication you show every day in treatment and assistance is essential to patient care, and I commend you for the hard work and compassion you display. forty one employees were recognized for their years of dedicated service

300 people were in attendance for the buffet dinner and ceremony.

Saint Joseph - London's Nurses Week Reception Saint Joseph - London employees were invited to a reception May 5 to honor all patient care staff during National Nurses Week. They enjoyed door prizes, food and lots of fun! Giveaways consisted of pens, flashlights, iPod speakers, candy containers, drink holders, daily planners, shirts and more.

Flaget Memorial Hospital's Pie Throwing Extravaganza On May 7 Flaget Memorial Hospital celebrated CHI's 13th birthday with cake and ice cream in conjunction with a pie throwing extravaganza! Employees paid $1 per vote on their employee of choice to receive a pie in his or her face. All vote proceeds benefited Relay for Life.
