This marks the second time Saint Joseph - Martin has received the Kentucky Hospital Association Quality Award. The first award was received in 2007. Congratulations to everyone at Saint Joseph - Martin for their hard work and dedication to achieve exceptional quality, patient-centered care! CHI – We Celebrate 13 Years!

On Friday, May 1, Saint Joseph Health System will observe the birthday of Catholic Health Initiatives. We belong to a national health system that was founded 13 years ago to advance a sacred mission and vision. We belong to an organization with a culture that is grounded in a spirituality of Reverence, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence. We therefore observe this occasion with gratitude for what has been accomplished and with hope for what we still can become.

Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the support and the challenge you offer us through the relationships we have formed within and across Catholic Health Initiatives. Be with us and strengthen our commitment to the common good of the individuals and communities we serve. May your loving presence and healing power be made ever more visible in our relationships with each other and with those we serve. Catholic Health Initiatives Retirement Plan Highlights

Eligibility

• As an eligible employee, you automatically participate in the plan on the January 1 after you’ve been paid for at least 1,000 hours of service in a calendar year (approximately 20 hours per week).

• For each year you are paid for at least 1,000 hours of service in a calendar year, Catholic Health Initiatives will contribute an Annual Retirement Credit to your account.

Annual Retirement Credit

• The amount of the Annual Retirement Credit is based on your pay and your years of contribution service.

Years of Contribution Service      Annual Retirement Credits
1 to 5 years                                  5% of pay
6 to 10 years                                6% of pay
11 to 15 years                               7% of pay
16 to 20 years                              8% of pay
21 to 25 years                              9% of pay
26 or more years                         10% of pay

Interest Credit

• Catholic Health Initiatives also contributes interest to your account, calculated on your retirement account balance. The interest credited to your account is based on the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as of the 12-month period ending the previous October 31, plus three percent. The 2008 interest credit was 6.5%!

Vesting

• After five years of at least 1,000 hours of service per year, you will be a vested participant and eligible for a retirement plan benefit, based on your retirement account balance, when you terminate your employment or retire. Benefits are payable as early as age 55 and you’ll have several payment options to choose from.

• While actively employed, you’ll receive a statement each year showing the growth of your account and the annual interest rate. If you leave Catholic Health Initiatives, you may receive a statement upon request.

If you have any questions, contact your Human Resources office.

Catholic Health Initiatives Employee Savings Plan Highlights

Employees are eligible to enroll upon date of hire and can enroll at any time throughout the year. The Employee Savings Plan allows employees to invest a portion of their eligible pay in the plan. This investment is deducted from pay before taxes are computed so employees pay less tax. Employees can choose a specific dollar amount or percentage of eligible pay to invest. There is no minimum amount that must be invested, but there are annual maximum contribution limits. If you have any questions, contact your Human Resources office.

Nursing Tips

Tips for Elevating the Image of Nursing

By Debbie Spencer, RN, VP Patient Care Services, SJH/SJE

Nurses build the public image of nursing through day-to-day interactions with patients, families and colleagues. Keep the following tips in mind as you seek to embody an image that reflects your level of education, expertise and professionalism.

Present a professional image:
• Make sure your uniform is clean, pressed and professional. Think about the patterns on your scrub tops - what do they communicate about you?
• Identify yourself as a professional nurse. Keep your name tag visible. Introduce yourself by your full name, and tell people you are an RN or LPN.

Communicate about your work and discuss your accomplishments:
• Prepare and practice a 30-second “elevator” speech about your role as a professional nurse. Communicate how you have made a difference for patients in your care.
• Describe your independent actions to prevent complications and save lives. Many patients and families believe that all nurses do is follow doctors’ orders. When you intervene to address a problem, let them know how your actions made the difference.
• Provide a great experience for nursing students. Talk to them about your role and your accomplishments as a nurse.

Correct inaccurate nursing stereotypes:
• When you see nurses or nursing misrepresented in the media, write a letter to the sponsor or editor.
• You can also work with the organization The Truth About Nursing (www.truthaboutnursing.org) to bring even greater attention to the issue.

Be engaged in the workplace:
• Take opportunities to participate in the employee opinion surveys. When submitting written comments, take care to provide suggestions for improvement.
• Participate in employee forums, town hall meetings, committees and other opportunities to become more involved in our organization. Actively engaged nurses experience higher levels of job satisfaction, which improves their sense of well being.

Grow professionally:
• Consider joining and being active in a professional association, whether it is your specialty association, state nurses’ association, honor society, or all three.
• Develop a five-year plan for your career. Identify professional development activities that will help you learn the skills necessary to achieve your plan.
• Promote positive working relationships within your team. Avoid gossip. If you are having difficulty working with a colleague, approach that individual with your concerns, and work to resolve them. Ask your manager to assist you if you need help preparing for this discussion. You will find that resolving issues proactively helps prevent conflicts from escalating.

Education

LEARN Goes Live

An update from Rose Patrick, Regional Director of Education and Organizational Development and LEARN System Leader

The CHI LEARN Learning Management System successfully began at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 24 simultaneously across Kentucky! At that moment, “Learning Assignments” were automatically routed to each employee, based on title and role. The first assignment for all employees is the 2009 Ethics and Values at Work module. This national Corporate Responsibility Program (CRP) assignment is due by June 30. A large percentage of employees will also be assigned the CRP General HIPAA module to be completed also by June 30. Please focus initially on completing the modules due in June!

To help everyone get started, a new LEARN Resource Center has been created on the Saint Joseph Heath System Web site at www.sjhlex.org. Click “For Employees Only” and scroll down and select “LEARN Resource Center.” Recordings have been made for students and managers to get started. Cheat sheets and a new HR policy are also posted there! During the first few weeks, it is very important for all employees to log into LEARN, create a password and review learning assignments and due dates. Employees with hospital e-mail addresses have already begun to receive LEARN notifications from Health Stream, the LEARN vendor.

The actual site for LEARN is on the home page of Inside CHI, several rows below the HR/Payroll Connect site. It is critically important that all employees go to this site and check their payroll and PTO time for accuracy, as well as check new LEARN assignments. Did you know that if you do not log into the site, your login and password will be inactivated after 180 days for HR/Payroll Connect and LEARN? Only about 50% of employees check their HR/Payroll Connect account for accuracy! Please begin the habit of checking HR/Payroll Connect and LEARN every pay period! It takes less than five minutes! Save yourself from future headaches dealing with log in problems!

Employees are encouraged to complete LEARN modules while at work. Manager pre-approval is necessary to complete mandatory LEARN assignments off the clock for hourly employees. There will be new additional modules purchased after July 1, including online certification programs for Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation Program.

SJHS LEARN Administrators are Rusty Sexton, 859.313.2617, and Brenda Harris, 859.313.1828, of the Educational Services Department. Please feel free to contact them with questions. Thank you to Paul Southgate, IT Team Members and the Kentucky Educators for their assistance in our SJHS LEARN implementation! Look for many more exciting announcements about LEARN in the near future.

Service in the Trenches

A "Service in the Trenches" workshop will be held Friday, May 1 at Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling from 1:00-2:30 p.m. in Education (Mandatory for ER Nurses; all others are welcome). Feedback

Dear Saint Joseph Hospital

"I’d like to express my deepest gratitude for the excellent care my father received at Saint Joseph Hospital. He experienced an allergic reaction, which led him to seek emergent treatment in your emergency department. After arriving in the emergency
department, within 30 minutes, his symptoms resulted in elective intubation to protect his airway. Dr. Cheeseman was the attending physician on duty and acted quickly, with confidence and poise. The nursing staff was supportive and attentive.

He was admitted to the CCU under the care of Dr. Estridge. After initial treatment, my father was diagnosed with angloedema, a rapidly progressive swelling of the upper airway. He remained intubated on the ventilator for over 48 hours. During this time, Dr. Estridge and the nursing staff routinely updated my family. We were accepted during visiting hours with kindness and sensitivity.

I’d like to especially pay tribute to the staff in the CCU. The nursing staff displayed sincerity in their practice and made my father feel safe and comfortable. It takes each individual giving their very best to make a great team. The CCU staff was superior in both their individual and team practice. My father is doing very well and wishes to add his appreciation for the fine care he received during his hospital stay."

Dear Saint Joseph - London

On April 21, a patient called Saint Joseph - London's administrative office after arriving home from a seven-day stay at the hospital. He was on the Med/Surg floor and could not begin to say what a wonderful stay it was. He said from the physicians to the housecleaners — everything was great. He stressed several times that he wanted Saint Joseph - London's president to know about his call and just how proud he is of his local hospital.

Saluting our Laboratory Professionals

During National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 19-25, Saint Joseph Health System saluted its medical laboratory professionals across the system who perform and interpret laboratory tests that save lives and keep people healthy. Using state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation, laboratory professionals help to prevent disease by detecting unknown health problems and by aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of existing conditions by giving accurate, timely test results. Did you know that laboratory tests results comprise an estimated 70% of the patient’s medical records and are vital to the diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease?
