Jim Heitzenrater has resigned as president of Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling (SJMS), after deciding to return to Texas to be closer to his family. Heitzenrater served at SJMS for a year and a half. Bruce Klockars (pictured right) has been appointed interim president of SJMS, while a search is conducted for a permanent successor to Heitzenrater. Klockars is also the president of another Saint Joseph Health System (SJHS) facility, Flaget Memorial Hospital (FMH), where he has been since 2000, and will continue his role there as well. Over the next several days, Klockars will be making rounds at SJMS to get to know the employees. Klockars has more than 30 years of experience in health care leadership, and has served as an interim leader three times previously. Klockars was also chief operating officer at Saint Joseph Hospital from 1990 to 2000, so he has tremendous knowledge of the Saint Joseph family, Catholic Health Initiatives and the central Kentucky market. During his tenure in Bardstown, FMH has been named a 100 Top Hospital by Thomson Reuters four years in a row. FMH was also named one of Kentucky’s Best Places to Work earlier this year. Even more specific to the current strategies and goals of SJMS, Klockars has extensive experience recruiting physicians, and has one of the highest performing leadership teams within SJHS. He also led the construction project to build one of the premier hospitals in a rural community in the country. SJMS will continue moving forward through the design phase of the new hospital, and anticipates breaking ground later this year. Watch for further news regarding additional growth, physician recruiting activity and enhancements, as well as the search for the permanent president. High-Quality Respiratory Care in London
Jerrell Cloud, director of pulmonary medicine at SJL, stated the award is recognition of the caring, professional care delivered by his 31-member staff. “The therapists here go beyond just doing treatments and truly care about patients and family members who receive care at our facility.” The QRCR program was started by the American Association for Respiratory Care in 2003 to help consumers identify those facilities utilizing qualified respiratory therapists. Hospitals that meet the QRCR requirements provide a level of respiratory care consistent with strict national standards and guidelines. A full list of hospitals having this designation is available at www.YourLungHealth.org. Other Saint Joseph Health System hospitals that have received this recognition are Saint Joseph Hospital (2007-2009), Saint Joseph East (2006) and Saint Joseph - Berea (2004-2006). Respiratory therapists are specially trained health care professionals who work under physicians' orders to provide a wide range of breathing treatments and other services to people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, AIDS, and other lung or lung-related conditions. They also care for premature infants and are key members of lifesaving response teams charged with handling medical emergencies.

As you may or may not recall, in the summer of 2007, the Saint Joseph Mobile Clinic parked its wheels and found a permanent home on the Saint Joseph Hospital campus. It is now located in the Parker House, sharing space in the basement with Baby Health, and is referred to as the Saint Joseph Free Health Clinic. Although the clinic is no longer mobile, it still provides free health care and medicine to those in need. The goal of the open house is to share with employees and physicians the services provided by the clinic and its mission to provide holistic care to the uninsured and underinsured, and for everyone to know where they are located and how they can help. "I just want to commend you on the excellent treatment I received while I was there! Dr. Ajayi is an excellent surgeon! Thank you so much for making me feel better! I was in room 150 ... I moved to 151 for the remainder of my stay. The staff that covered these rooms on all shifts were wonderful! The student nurses, CNAs, nurses, lab techs and even the cleaning staff treated me as if I were the only patient they had! Even though I asked to go home every day and could have thought of many other places I would rather have been, I did have a pleasant stay at your hospital. I do have to say a special thank you to my Saturday and Sunday CNA Kylie and Nurse Heidi. I could not have asked for any better treatment from a CNA or nurse. They are so upbeat and positive. I could tell they enjoyed their jobs and it showed in how they treated the patients. Again, thank you and God bless you! I feel 100% better!" |

The Taste of Bardstown fundraiser for Hospice of Nelson County, a service of Flaget Memorial Hospital in Bardstown, was a huge success. About 300 people turned out for the event April 14, despite a thunderstorm watch. More than two dozen restaurants donated food and served it from their booths. About $6,000 was raised from ticket sales, which will be split between Hospice and the local hospitality association. A silent auction of baskets donated to Hospice netted another $2,000 for the home care service. Pictured above is Sharon Bade, director of Hospice of Nelson County, sampling the food at a booth at the tasting.
Parish Health Ministry Summit
Flora Washburn (left), mission leader for Saint Joseph - Berea and Saint Joseph - Mount Sterling, and Dorothy Zimmerman, vice president of mission for Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East, attended the Parish Health Ministry Summit at St. Claire Regional Medical Center on March 28. They conducted a presentation on violence prevention. The summit explored a variety of physical, emotional and mental health issues that challenge our parish families. Presenters discussed how health ministry teams can recognize issues in household violence, such as physical and emotional abuse, bullying in and out of school classrooms, etc. They are pictured with Deacon Bill Wakefield (CFO, Catholic Diocese Lexington).
Pat Reffitt (left), interim director of case management for Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East, and Judy Donohue, a chaplain at Saint Joseph East, also attended the Parish Health Ministry Summit. Aside from violence prevention, the summit focused on Ethical and Religious Directives. Presenters discussed how health ministry teams can help families form medical directives in the face of declining health. Good Friday Service
