Flaget Memorial Awarded $84,000 Grant to Expand Dental Services at Community Clinic

Flaget Memorial Hospital has been awarded a grant of $84,000 by Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) to expand free dental care services at the Nelson County Community Clinic (NCCC), which offers free medical care, dental care and medications to area residents unable to pay for care.

The funding will be used to purchase much-needed dental equipment, dental instruments, supplies and anesthesia, and to expand dental services. The funding also gives the clinic the ability to provide education and preventive oral care.

The NCCC has provided free medical care and medicines to uninsured workers since 2006, when it was opened with a $277,000 grant from CHI’s Mission and Ministry Fund, and with generous in-kind donations from the community. The clinic is an outgrowth of the Nelson County Healthy Community Initiative, which began in 2003 with a planning grant from CHI.

For more information, visit www.Flaget.com or click here to read the full news release regarding the grant.

You should have received your Open Enrollment packet from CHI at your home. This packet includes an annual enrollment notice and a personalized worksheet. This year, enrollment for benefits is online through HR/Payroll Connection on Inside CHI. The following online tools are available to help you decide what plan is best:
• Compare Your Medical Options
• Medical Expense Estimator

At any time during Annual Enrollment, you can submit questions to a dedicated voice mail box and e-mail address—859.313.2345, SJHSKyBenefits@catholichealth.net. You will receive a personalized response.

HealthTube videos support the CHI Healthy Spirit initiative, a system-wide effort to create a healthy workplace—physically, financially, mentally and spiritually. Also, remember to read the second issue of Spirit, CHI’s new magazine that is mailed directly to your home. The current issue focuses on medical plan changes for 2010 and how you can save money (you can read the issue online at Inside CHI: About CHI/CHI Healthy Spirit/Spirit Magazine).

Discounted Massage Services for SJHS Employees
Factor health massages into your Flexible Spending Account calculations
during Annual Enrollment!

As part of the Saint Joseph Health System Wellness Initiative beginning in January, 2010 (watch for more details soon!), Saint Joseph Health System employees will get a discount at “Massage Envy” on massage services. The discount includes:

• With membership to Massage Envy, the employee will receive one free 60-minute massage every month. The membership fee is $44 dollars per month, a $5 discount off the regular $49 per month fee. This is a $60 savings to Saint Joseph Health System employees.

• Additional massages are $39 for 60 minutes.

• If a massage is not used during any month, it rolls over to the next month and massages are not “lost.”

• Massage therapy can qualify as a medical expense. Your Saint Joseph Health System Flexible Spending Account (FSA) can be utilized for massage services with a valid physician’s order. According to the IRS, qualifying medical expenses must be primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental defect or illness. Some examples include stress, back pain, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, etc. Ask your physician for more information or refer to CHI Connect for information regarding your FSA.

Other benefits of the program include family add-on discounts, retail discounts, discount pricing on any two or more massages in the same month, standing appointments, etc.

• For more information regarding Massage Envy or to find a location, visit www.massageenvy.com.

• Discounted massage services are also available at Saint Joseph Healthy Living Center at the Beaumont YMCA in Lexington. Contact Teresa McCord for more information at 859.219.0530.

Fayette County H1N1 Vaccine Clinics

Saint Joseph East and Saint Joseph Hospital (SJE/SJH) continue to work with the Fayette County Public Health Department during this time of limited H1N1 vaccine. SJE/SJH have received a very small amount of H1N1 vaccine and have offered, free of charge, to direct patient care providers of high-risk patients in its emergency rooms and women's services. The next shipment of H1N1 vaccine that SJE/SJH receives will be offered to direct patient care providers in other units such as critical care, oncology and med/surg. The Fayette County Public Health Department distributes the H1N1 vaccine to SJE/SJH and it will continue to be offered to direct patient care providers.

Because the vaccine that has been distributed to SJE/SJH is very limited, please consider attending one of the Fayette County Public Health Department H1N1 Influenza Clinics listed below. If you go to the influenza clinics, you should be immunized as long as the health department has vaccine. For additional information, call the help line at 877.843.7727.

Wellness

Great American Smokeout

Thursday, November 19, is the 34th Great American Smokeout. It was inaugurated in 1976 to inspire and encourage smokers to quit for one day. Now, 39.8 percent of the 43.4 million Americans who smoke have attempted to quit for at least one day in the past year, and the Great American Smokeout remains a great opportunity to encourage people to commit to making a long-term plan to quit for good.

The Quit For Life Program has resources available to help smokers quit. With its FREE confidential counseling, your chances of quitting for life are eight times greater than trying to quit on your own. Saint Joseph Health System employees can enroll for FREE! Call 1.866.QUIT.4.LIFE or visit www.quitnow.net (1.866.784.8454).

Saint Joseph Health System is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its tobacco-free initiative on Friday, November 20!

Why Quit?

No matter how old you are or how long you've smoked, quitting will help you live longer. People who stop smoking before age 50 cut their risk of dying in the next 15 years in half compared with those who continue to smoke. Ex-smokers enjoy a higher quality of life with fewer illnesses from cold and flu viruses, better self-reported health, and reduced rates of bronchitis and pneumonia.

• 20 minutes after quitting:
Your heart rate and blood pressure drops.

• 12 hours after quitting:
The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.

• 2 weeks to 3 months after quitting:
Your circulation improves and your lung function increases.

• 1 to 9 months after quitting:
Coughing and shortness of breath decrease; cilia (tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs) regain normal function in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce the risk of infection.

• 1 year after quitting:
The excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's.

• 5 years after quitting:
Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a non-smoker 5 to 15 years after quitting.

• 10 years after quitting:
The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker's. The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix, and pancreas decrease.

• 15 years after quitting:
The risk of coronary heart disease is that of a non-smoker's.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is a chronic disease which means people will have it for life. For a person with diabetes, research shows that a person is at much greater risk for long term health problems affecting the heart, kidney, eyes, nerve, vascular and feet.

The good news is that diabetes is a controllable disease. It is a lifestyle disease because lifestyle changes are needed to help control it. To help control diabetes, the following is recommended:
1. Follow a healthy diet (low in fat and calories)
2. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day (check with your doctor before starting exercise)
3. Have moderate weight loss if overweight
4. Stop smoking
5. Monitor blood sugars at home regularly
6. See your doctor routinely

Saint Joseph Health System is on the cutting edge in helping people with diabetes. The Diabetes & Nutrition Center (DNC) provides both inpatient and outpatient education and consultation for people with diabetes. Call 859.313.2958 to learn more.

Feedback

Saint Joseph – London: A Letter to the Housekeeping Supervisor

“I just had to make a comment about what happened while my mother was a patient in recovery. I was sitting at her bedside and had nothing interesting to do but watch the employee across from us clean a patient room.

“I have been a nurse since 1989 and have worked in hospitals and physician offices and I have to say I have never seen a room cleaned as professionally and detailed as what I saw. I have one thing to say: I would actually feel totally comfortable to sleep in the area I saw cleaned. I was so impressed I just had to ask him his name and his supervisor. So THANK YOU Travis Owens for making me believe these rooms are truly cleaned!”

Way to go Travis! And way to go John Feltner for supervising such a great staff!
